COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE BLOG FROM BRITTSBURG

By Cory Strode on 2023-04-19 20:20:00

It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is at the Petersen Event Center in Pittsburg, PA. Our commentary team is Excalbur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone.

Jungle Boy is out with a mic and the crowd likes to sing his theme.  As does Taz.

He’s immediately interrupted by Sammy Geuvara. And HE is immediately interrupted by Darby Allin. Will he get to say anything?

Darby says that he’s known Sammy the longest, and he thinks he’s least qualified to go for the championship because he’s a follower. He says Jericho is holding him back, and if he has a problem with that, he can talk to him. He then says JB worked the least because he was part of the California Clique. He then says nothing about JB intimidates him.

JB says he sees kids with Darby’s paint on his face and he says he wishes they knew what he was really like. He’s aloof and rude. He says the only reason Darby is here is because he didn’t make it as a skateboarder. He then turns to Sammy and says it would be a challenge to explain what a dirtbag he is. He says he does respect Sammy because what you see is what you get.

Now it’s Sammy’s turn and he says JB is just like MJF, hand picked and a Goldenboy. He says he and Darby are two sides to the same coin and do whatever they have to do to make it, while JB just coasts in. He then says he saw Darby win the TNT title, and he was going to do it better and he did. He then says it’s time for Darby to sit back and watch as he becomes the AEW Champion.

JB says he will win the title for everyone who has supported him since day one.

MJF has heard enough. He stays on the stage and heels Britt Baker of all people.  He says there will be a pillars tournament and the winner faces him at Double of Nothing. He then pulls Darby’s name out of a hat and says Darby gets a bye in the tournament. So, tonight, Sammy and JB will face each other tonight.

I like this opening because it kept the table being set for the feud between all four of the people involved, and it also means that, thankfully, we probably won’t get a four way title match at the PPV.

The Outcasts (Toni Storm and Ruby Soho) w/Saraya vs Jamie Hayter and Britt Baker

The Outcasts attack and everyone brawls down to ringside. Hayter and Storm are the first ones in the ring so that’s when the match starts. Good.  This should not be a match, but a fight. When Hayter goes to the ropes, Saraya grabs her foot, and when Hayter chases her, Saraya runs like a dainty lady in the 1930’s movie.

The match starts with Hayter looking strong, and I notice that Storm and Soho have their hair done in similar ways as well as similar ring gear to show team solidarity. The Outcasts take over as we go to picture in picture, and they are letting the heat build as Hayter can’t get to her corner to tag in Baker. When Ruby is antagonizing the fans at ringside it’s abundantly clear she should NEVER be a baby face.

Baker gets the tag right after we come back from picture in picture. They also now have Baker with the glove in her boot, so Rebel isn’t needed any more, much to Anthony’s Pires’s chagrin. We get a few near falls, but we know they aren’t the finish because the partners kind of half heartedly motion toward breaking it up, but don’t even get in the ring. They need to clean that up.

Baker finally gets the win with the lockjaw on Ruby.

Winners:  Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter

We go to the back and Wardlow says he has brought in a Horseman to even things up.  Arn says he wants to do the kind of thing the Horseman did. Arn says that Tully Blanchard was t he best checkers player in the business, but Arn plays chess.

The Elite are on their way to the ring. Kenny says that the Blackpool Combat Club used to be the most respected wrestlers in the business until they injured his friends. He says they are inviting the BCC to the ring and squash the beef once and for all.

Bryan Danielson is on the big screen and the rest fo the team sneaks into the ring and attacks. It’s BRAWL TIME!! Once the BCC has the upper hand, Bryan comes out to remind them they are amateurs.

Don Callis comes out with a chair, gets a good look and drops the chair, running away. Bryan says that Kenny Omega has potential, but he needs to be gone. Bryan pulls out a screwdriver and Don comes back with Konosuke Takeshida. He helps turn the tables and the BCC is driven off.

Hmm….does that mean Adam Page isn’t going to be returning to the team?

Powerhouse Hobbs (TNT Champion) w/QT Marshall vs Wardlow w/Arn Anderson

We get a quick recap showing when QT Marshall turned on Arn Anderson about a lifetime ago.

HOSS FIGHT!

I thought this would be a PPV level rematch, but TV is the main driver for everyone, I guess. They throw each other around in the ring, then at ringside and then through the crowd. They brawl back to the ringside area, and after Wardlow goes over the barricade, he tags Hobbs with a right jab that just popped Hobbs back and it made me laugh at how effective and how petty it was.  Nice use of the emotion they build up for this feud.

When they come back from picture in picture, I keep hoping that Anderson does something in this match other than stand at ringside. He’s a great asset that AEW hasn’t used since Cody left. We do get Arn scaring the crap out of QT before Penta gives QT a super kick, since he came out from the back for some reason.

Wardlow gives a power bomb and the crowd remembers how much they love the power bomb symphony, and after the third, Wardlow gets the pin and the win.

Winner and NEW TNT Champion: Wardlow

Before we get a celebration, Christian Cage and Luchasaurus come to the stage.

Renee is with Sammy and asks him how he feels.  MJF comes in to interrupt.  MJF says they got off on the wrong foot, and he says he has an agreement that will behoove the both of them. He offers them a guaranteed spot in the main event at Double of Nothing if he just lays down. And Sammy blows up at him.

MJF then offers him a blank check on top of the main event. Sammy writes a number on the check and MJF says they have a deal. Sammy says that friends don’t shake hands, they hug.

Komander vs Jay White

This should be a good spotlight for Jay White for American Audiences. Hopefully that’s what they use it for, since he hasn’t been with a major company in the US, so most TV viewers don’t know who he is.

Komander shows off his high flying and rope moves as Jay White lets him get his stuff in until White starts to take over the match. White is at his best when he cuts off guys like this and starts manhandling them. They have Shawn Spears at ringside to interact with White from time to time.

After the picture in picture, we start to get the Jay White arrogance, followed by him getting beat down until he turns the tide again. I get that they want to make sure Kommander looks good, but Jay White should have gotten a more lopsided match to introduce him. Jay finally gets the Blade Runner for the pin and the win.

Winner: Jay White

After the match, Juice Robinson and Jay White go after Shawn Spears, and Ricky Starks charges to ringside to help, which causes Jay and Juice to bail.

In the back, Renee is about to interview FTR, but they see that Mark Brisoe was attacked and is being looked at by medical professionals.  They go to see what they can do, and Jeff Jarrett’s team is there as well.  As Briscoe is unable to perform tonight, he has Jarrett’s team join with FTR for the match later tonight.

Jericho is now on his way to the ring. Before he can say anything, it’s all about the boom, Adam Cole Bay Bay comes to the ring.

Cole says he was inspired by Jericho. Now they are in the ring for the first time. Jericho holds out a hand and Cole shakes it. Jericho says he has no respect for Cole.  Taz says he needs to hear Jericho out. Jericho keeps heeling Cole and that for Coel to shake Keith Lee’s hand was unacceptable.  Cole says that Jericho has been a real jagoff. He asks who is the real Jericho, using Jericho’s insults against him. He then steps to Jericho and says “Now what?”

Jericho says he is not a jagoff, which makes the crowd chant it again. He tells Cole if he’s smart, he’ll get out of the ring right now. They come to blows and Daniel Garcia rushes in to attack Cole. Britt Baker runs in and pulls Jericho off of Cole and then slaps him. The Outcasts come out from under the ring and they beat down Baker.

Cole is handcuffed to the bottom rope and the Outcasts make Baker watch as Jericho threatens Cole with a Kendo stick. Instead, he hands it to Saraya, who beats down Baker with it.

We then get an update on the Firm Deletion will take place, and they will discuss it on Rampage!

Matt Menard, Angelo Parker, and Jake Hager vs The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn

And it’s a brawl. It’s a quick match and for the most part it is a crowd pleasing shenanigans match. Mandard and Parker are good in their role as goofball heels. I would think that The Acclaimed would be used better than quick matches like this, but you need to let the crowd get their sing along stuff I suppose. I’d rather see them having more serious matches.

Oh, and The Acclaimed win with the mic drop.

Winners: The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn

Sammy Guevara vs Jungle Boy

OK, Sammy took the check to lay down, but he is in the main event already? How is that supposed to work?

JB and Sammy are showing off their high flying stuff as the match starts. Sammy hits a Spanish Fly from the top as we see Darby in the rafters. They move to trading moves on the apron, and we get another Spanish Fly, this time from the apron to the floor. They go through more high spots on the picture in picture, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of flow in the match, just move, switch, move, switch.

JB gets a power bomb on the apron, which I believe is the hardest part of the ring, and then goes to the top to get a destroyer on Sammy for two. Sammy then gets his flurry of offense ending in a cutter from the top.

MJF is in the back and says that Sammy is his new best friend. Shouldn’t he be upset that Sammy hasn’t laid down?

They then get another series of big attacks on each other. After a slap fight, JB gets the snare trap and Sammy gets to the ropes. Sammy drop kicks JB off the ropes into the timekeeper’s table. Sammy interrupts the count and MJF is at ringside and nails JB with the Dynamite Diamond so that JB can’t answer the count.

Winner by countout: Sammy Guevara

Afterwards, MJF celebrates with Sammy as Darby watches from the rafters.
