GCW EMOFIGHT BLOG FROM LOS ANGELES

By Cory Strode on 2023-04-01 17:31:00

And with this and Prestige earlier today, that's 10 shows I covered since Wednesday night and I'm done.  The Indy Hall of Fame is tomorrow and will be a blog so I don't have to write "They lock up, collar and elbow tie up" again for a few days.   It was fun, exhausting and one hell of a ride.

GCW Emo Fight is in the Ukrainian Cultural Center in LA and this is the LAST wrestling show I am covering this weekend.  Thank you so much for reading these reports!

Commentary is by Jordan Castle and Veda Scott

Scramble Match:  Jimmy Lloyd, Starboy Charlie, Sonico, Matt Vandagriff, B-Boy, and Sawyer Wreck

Starboy and Sonico start out and then Matt joins in and Starboy goes out. Wreck then takes Matt’s place. Lloyd then takes Sonico’s place, and Wreck is replaced by B-Boy. Each gets a few moves before someone else comes in. B-Boy does the full Emo expression to start with.

Then it becomes full on brawling outside the ring. B-Boy does a bit where he walks around the ring to then eye poke Charlie. When people return to the ring, all of the Emo is gone and brawling keeps up. After another batch of everyone in the ring, it’s back to two at a time. The focus is mostly on Charlie and Sonico until Matt comes in, fights with Sonico and gets a 450 splash for the pin and the win.

Winner: Matt Vandagriff

A fun multi person scramble with some funny stuff at the beginning as they play into the Emo thing.

They have music between matches, and the first is Little Eric. Not my kind of music since I am a Garage rock/rockabilly guy, but the crowd seemed to take it like a break in the show.

Brooke Havok vs Sandra Moone vs Janai Kai

Moone is the only one not billed as being Emo, and she runs to the ring with a bounce in her step. Havok and Kai have the Goth/Emo thing down.

Kai just sits in the corner as the match starts. Kai puts her hook up, crosses her legs and looks away from the other two. Moone and Havok go for quick pins to start off the match. Then, they turn and stomp down Kai. Jai is whipped into the ropes and drops to the mat to sit again. The crowd chants Sit Forever.

They pull out Jai and both go for a pin and only get two. Jai sits in the middle of the ring and when she takes a clothesline and lays there, moving to sit in the corner again. Kai kicks them both away and they charge her. Kai gets up and hits a slow scorpion death drop on Havok. All three women throw hands on their knees in the middle of the ring.

The match becomes more traditional with Jai moving back to the corner to sit down when she can.Kai keeps her hood up, does the sad Charlie Brown walk when she’s up, and then hits a series of kicks and a suplex on Havok. The announcers let us know that Kai doesn’t want to try, but she doesn’t want someone else to win either, so that story plays out as Moone and Havok have a more traditional match. Kai puts a dragon sleeper on Navok for the win, and then takes a selfie with her phone.

Winner: Janai Kai

EMO JANAI KAI WAS FUN!!  Emo Fight is held after 2 am, is a different kind of card, and this match was a great way to play with the Emo stuff in a wrestling ring. I am used to Kai being a traditional kicking wrestler, but this was fun.

The next musical act is Horsehead, who has some mic trouble. He does two songs that are super-Emo.

Kevin Blackwood vs Jimmy Jacobs

Jacobs is able to get the upper hand with his headlock, running the ropes and tossing Blackwood to the outside. Blackwood takes his time to get back in the ring and goes after Jacobs in the corner. Jacobs turns it around and stomps a mudhole in Blackwood.

The crowd is solidly behind Jacobs, and they spend a lot of time fighting in the corners. Blackwood gets a running clothesline and the speed he has looks awesome as it goes on. Jacob does the head scissors spin and then tosses Blackwood to the floor. Jacobs is then pulled out to the floor where they brawl.

For almost 3 in the morning, they’ve got a good crowd.

Jacos dives into Blackwood on a chair. They return to the ring and Blackwood takes over with a side slam and a two count. He works over Jacobs with stomps. Jacobs tries to fire up, and Blackwood ends it with a power bomb. Jacobs powers up again and takes over. He hits a tornado suplex and locks on a guillotine choke. Blackwood lifts Jacobs and drives him into the corner. He hits a stuffer and then suplexes Jacobs into the corner. A double stomp gives Blackwood another two count.

Jacobs gets an ace crusher and then sliced bread 2 for a two count and then the guillotine choke. Blackwood rolls it into a cover for two. Blackwood gets a pile driver for two, and when Jacobs kicks out, the crowd lights up.

It’s time for doors as Blackwood puts one in the ring. They struggle over who will be put through the door. Blackwood gets a Death Valley Driver through the door for two. Blackwood keeps covering and getting two counts. Jacobs spikes Blackwood off the top and finally gets Blackwood to tap out to the guillotine choke.,

Winner: Jimmy Jacobs.

The final musical act is Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. Again, not my style of music, but it fits the general Emo vibe.

Los Macizos (Ciclope & Miedo Extremo) vs Moonlight Express (MAO & Mike Bailey) vs Wasted Youth (Dyln McKay & Marcus Mathers)

This is the last match I am covering for the weekend, since tomorrow I cover the Indie Hall of Fame.  If you hung with me, thank you so, so much. I HAVE SEEN SO MUCH WRESTLING BEFORE MANIA EVEN STARTED!!

Bailey starts by asking each person in the ring if they are really Emo or a poseur.

He thinks Loz Macizos are Poseurs. MAO leads the crowd singing an Emo song I don't know and Los Macizos don’t either so they are dumped out of the ring.

The match then gets started with dives to the floor from pretty much everyone. Los Macizos hold the ring. Bailey is held in a surfboard and rather than break it up, MAO covers for a pin, and the hold is released at two so there can be a kick out. Moonlight Express does a few Tag team moves, with great timing. Wasted Young comes into the ring for them to work Moonlight Express.

We then get Los Macizos working with Wasted Youth. Everyone is doing fast paced work, with some well paced high spots. Moonlight Express is in next and after they dump Wasted Youth to the floor it’s dive time again with a buddy sault. Wasted Youth gets back the ring with Moonlight and Mathers gets a 450 for a cover and Ciclope breaks it up.

Los Macizos are back together in the ring and work over Wasted Youth, and Moonlight takes their place. Moonlight gets a tornado driver on Mathers for the in and the win.

Winners: Moonlight Express

The card was OK, but the match with Brooke Havok vs Sandra Moone vs Janai Kai was by FAR my favorite and I hope we get Emo Janai Kai again.
