COMPLETE AEW DYNAMITE IN PHOENIX BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2023-02-22 20:24:00

It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is coming to you from the Footprint Center in Phoenix Arizona. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone.

Let’s get started with the Big Announcement:  Anthony Pires is back doing the play by play recap and I am back to blogging!

No, no, no, that’s not it.  The Big Announcement is that I am in a Blizzard Warning, and they have declared that travel is difficult to impossible for tonight and tomorrow!

No, no, no….they don’t start with the Big Announcement like they normally do.

Orange Cassidy (AEW All Atlantic Champion) vs Wheeler Yuta

They set this up with Yuta being a jerk to Cassidy on Rampage, saying that his time with the Best Friends was a waste of his time. They show this during Yuta’s entrance

They start off hot without any of Cassidy’s goofiness, and it reminds the audience that Cassidy is a good mat wrestler. After a great, fast paced opening, Claudio Castagnoli slaps Yuta and tells him to screw the pure wrestling stuff, at this point, Yuta gets into the ring and attacks in a more brutal way, even biting Cassidy.

After Yuta beats the tar out of Cassidy on the floor, Claudio heads to the back. When they return to the ring, Yuta is using more strikes, and is more brutal with his attacks. Cassidy does his pockets bit and uses the soft kicks to upset Yuta.  When we come back from picture in picture, Yuta has moved to big moves.

As they move to the final third of the match, they  both spit on each other, and then throw hands in the middle of the ring. Yuta isn’t able to get the seat belt on, Cassidy hits his Orange Punch and doesn’t win, the Beach Break and doesn’t win, and finally hits another Orange Punch for the pin and the win.

Winner: Orange Cassidy

After the match, Cassidy calls for the Best Friends hug, and Claudio comes out at the same time. Yuta leaves without the hug.

In the back, Hangman Page and Evil Uno are with Renee Paquette. Uno tells Page not to get involved because it’s time for the Dark Order to stand up.

Ricky Starks comes to the ring to talk about the Jericho Appreciation Society not wanting him to have a rematch with Chris Jericho, so he will be moving on. He has an open contract for a match at Revolution. And Jericho’s music hits. He comes out wearing a suit covered in spikes.

Jericho says that Starks is trying to bait him into a match. Jericho says he could beat Starks at any time, but it will never happen again because Starks is not at his level.  Peter Avalon comes out to accept the challenge, but Jericho drops him. Jericho comes to the ring. He says that he should take the open contract and embarrass Starks at Revolution.

Starks then praises Jericho and says that Jericho will use the JAS to win, but Starks thinks he can do it all by himself.

OK, Jericho being tricked into a match would be funny, but this just work because it means Jericho has to be a stupid idiot to fall for it.

And Jericho is now a stupid idiot. He signs for the match and that the JAS has to stay in the back.

Still no big announcement that ice cream bars are back as we get a video to lead into the tag team battle royal.

Lee Moritaty and Big Bill w/Stokely Hathaway vs The Acclaimed w/Billy Gunn

I prefer Big Bill on Rampage so that JR can make snarky remarks about how uncreative his name is.

The crowd is HUGE into the Acclaimed as the match starts. The Acclaimed are dominating when we go into commercial, and Bowens gets the hot tag when we come out of commercial. The Gunns come down to the ring and attack Billy Gunn. The Acclaimed chase them out of the area and The Acclaimed win with a Mic drop.

Winners: The Acclaimed

This was a quick match to keep heat on the Gunns, and give the crowd a match with shenanigans.

Tony Schiavone is on the stage to talk to Christian Cage. Jungle Boy spears Cage as he comes out and leaves to get a pair of chairs. He sets Christian up to take the ConChairto. However, before he can hit it, Cage nails a low blow. Cage then slams Jungle Boy’s head into the chair on the floor repeatedly. JB is busted open and Cage stands over him in triumph.

Up next is a video recap of Wardlow vs Samoa Joe.

Saraya w/Toni Storm vs The Already In The Ring Skye Blue

Storyline match where Saraya and Toni Storm beat Blue up, with Storm attacking whenever Sarayua is able to distract the ref. Saraya wins with a modified Texas Cloverleaf where she pulls Blue off the mat and locks her arms as well.

Winner: Saraya

Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter come down to make the save. As Saraya and Storm go up the ramp and Ruby Soho comes out and calls for a title match by using the universal hand gestures for a title around her waist.

Finally, we get the big announcement and that is that the old HBO comedy “Silicon Valley” will be rerun on TBS!

Oh.  That was a commercial, not the big announcement.

Bryan Danielson comes to the ring. He gives a recap of the feud between him and MJF and is incredulous that MJF hates him, since MJF has been doing all of the terrible things to him. MJF comes out and says he knows who Bryan really is. MJF then tells a story about how he has been betrayed by everyone he’s ever known, including a girl he proposed to.

MJF says the only thing that shows him unconditional love is his title belt. He says that everyone loves Bryan, and he has something MJF will never have, a family, and Bryan takes his family for granted. He then says he hates Bryan because he had concussions that debilitated him, so every time Bryan wrestles, he shows wrestling is more important than his family.

MJF then says he will speak to Bryan’s children, and that’s when Bryan says if he does, he will kick the shit out of MJF.  MJF does it anyway. And Bryan does nothing.

MJF keeps talking about how he will beat Bryan up as he gets into the ring and THEN Bryan attacks him. Security swarms the ring to pull them apart.

Are we supposed to feel bad for MJF?  MJF’s promos are usually solid gold, but this was pretty awful.

In the back, Tony Schiavone is with Jaime Hayter and Britt Baker. Hayter talks about how Saraya is trying to destroy AEW from the ground up, but she hasn’t lost a match yet so she may deserve a title match. However, Ruby Soho deserves a match as well.  So, it will be a three way title match at Revolution.

Revolution Tag Team Battle Royal

Aussie Open is in this match, so they had to fly all the way from Australia to be in a battle royal. Angelo Parker and Matt Menard havent’ gotten in the ring as the match goes on, since you can’t be eliminated if you aren’t in the ring.

Mark Briscoe runs to the ring and attacks Josh Woods on the floor. When we come back from commercial, Aussie Open is eliminated by Butcher and The Blade, so that was worth the 12 hour flight. They set up a feud between La Faction Ingobernable and the Lucha Brothers, which will be a lot of fun down the line.

NOW Park and Menard come into the ring. Danhausen curses them and the Best Friends eliminates them.

After the second commercial break, we are told Aussie Open will be on Rampage against the Young Bucks. We are down to Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal and Trent Beretta. Anytime Trent tosses someone to the apron, Satnam runs to be there to catch them. Jay Lethal is eliminated and when Jarrett is tossed, Satnam catches him and returns him to the ring, where he hits The Stroke and eliminates Trent.

Winners and going on to the AEW Tag Team Title match at Revolution: Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal

We get a video from The House of Black that there is a problem in AEW, and they will eliminate it. They say they will be talking to The Elite about the Trios titles at Rampage.

Tony’s big announcement is next!

Tony is with Renee and he says that Adam Cole will be making the Big Announcement. Next month, there will be a new series AEW All Access, a show about what goes on behind the scenes. It will be after Dynamite next month, and he will be making his in ring return the same week All Access begins.

For us fans, it is not that big an announcement, but at least it’s better than Power Slap.  A behind the scene reality show after Dynamite may be a good idea. We’ll see, since these shows rarely do well in the ratings.

We then get Sonjay Dutt, Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, and Satnam Singh celebrating. The Gunns show up and they should work together to get rid of the other two teams.

Jon Moxley vs Evil Uno

Uno attacks strong out of the gate, but Mox comes back and attacks in the corner. Uno goes after Mox again, taking off his vest and beating Mox with it, and as they fight, Mox rips up the mask of Uno. They brawl in and out of the ring and we get shots of Adam Page watching the match backstage.

Uno is busted open and he gives Mox a pair of pile drivers. Mox is able to take control and as Mox puts on the bulldog choke, blood is spurting from Uno’s head, and the ref calls the match.

Winner: Jon Moxley

Mox won’t let go of the bulldog.  Jon Silver and Alex Reynolds come to the ring, followed by Claudio and Yuta.  As they are all brawling in the ring, Page runs to the ring, barbed wire wrapped around his arm and he attacks Mox, so Mox is busted open as well as we are desperately out of time.
