It is Wednesday and it’s time for AEW Dynamite “New Year’s Smash."
We are in Bloomfield, CO at the 1st Bank Center. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone. Anthony Pires is on assignment, so I will be doing play by play instead of blogging, so for my opinions, you’ll have to listen to the post show party audio!
Bryan Danielson vs Ethan Page w/ Stokely Hathaway
Hathaway is wearing an AEW hat after Bryan made fun of his bald head last week.
MJF is up in a sky box and taunts Bryan Danielson, and Page attacks him before the bell. Page tosses Danielson to the mat and then tosses Bryan into the ropes and hits him with a shoulder tackle. Page works over Bryan in the comer. Bryan is able to escape and attack with a flying elbow strike and chops and kicks in the corner. Page reverses and does the same. Bryan reverses and goes back to kicks.
Bryan drags him from the corner and tries to lock on a surf board. When he can’t get it he turns it into a stomp and keep up the attack. They run the ropes and Page gets a back elbow and then mounts for a ground and pound with elbows. He slams Bryan and drinks in the boos from the crowd. He puts Bryan in the corner and up on top. He tries for a super plex, but Bryan blocks it and head butts P{age to the mat. He follows with a shotgun drop kick. Hathaway gets on the apron and Bryan knocks off his hat. Page misses Bryan and almost runs into Hathaway. Bryan knocks him to the floor and then leaps onto him.
Page is first in the ring and Page can hit a pump kick, knocking Bryan to the floor as we go picture in picture.
When we return to full screen, Bryan is struggling to stand and Page nails him in the face. The next time, Bryan is able to get a German Suplex and they both take time to recover. They are up and throw hands in the middle of the ring. Bryan gets a drop toe hold on Page into the corner and then he goes to chops and kicks. Bryan up top for the hurrancanrana off the top.
Bryan hits the Yes kicks. Page dodges the last one and when he runs at Bryan, Bryan pulls down the top up and he’s up and over. Bryan leaps onto him and they fight on the floor with Page tossing him into the ring steps and hitting a slam. Page rolls Bryan into the ring. He leaps onto him for a two count. Page rains down right hands and then tries for the stomps. Bryan reverses it and page reverses again and pull Bryan into a fireman‘s carry. Bryan escapes and hits a DDT. He hits a kick to the head and gets a two count.
Bryan gets the LeBell lock but Page scoots to the ropes for the break. Bryan falls back onto the mat while holding his head. Bryan is up and goes to the top. Page meets him there and goes for the Ego's Edge. Bryan is able to hit the hammer and anvil strike, but Page pulls Bryan into the Ego’s Edge slam for a two count.
Page pulls Bryan up and goes for the Ego's Edge again. Bryan escapes and hits the psycho knees. Bryan gets the stomps and before Bryan can put on his submission, Page is knocked out.
Winner: Bryan Danielson
Danielson calls for MJF to join him as we get a video of the issues between Samoa Joe and Wardlow.
Wardlow is with Renee and he gets attacks by Samoa Joe and a steel pipe. Renee is in the back to get a medical update on Adam Page and Page says it is not looking promising and he’s getting frustrated. The doctor says if Page quits attacking Mox, he could be back in the ring in two weeks.
Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli vs Top Flight (Dante and Darius Martin)
The fight starts before the bell with Darius leaping onto Mox, but then being dropped, and Claudio dropping Dante on the barricade.
Claudio stomps down Darius in the corner. He and Mox tags in and out to keep up the attack on Darius. Darius tries to punch his way free, but Claudio slams him and they go back to quick tags and attacks. Mox works over Darius in a neutral corner. Darius is able to fight free and hit Mox with a drop kick. Dante tags in and he gets in flying attacks and a standing monsoon into a one count.
Mox is able to dump Dante and then gets in a series of hammer and anvil elbows. Darius is able to get a chop block on Mox as we go to picture in picture.
When we return to full screen, Darius has a leg hold on Mox to twist his knee. Mox kicks free and Darius gets a one count. Darius tries for a suplex, but Mox blocks it and Darius knocks Mox for a loop. Both men get quick tags so it’s Dante and Claudio. Claudio gets a series of European uppercuts in the corner back and forth from corner to corner and ending it with a drop kick and a two count. Caludio tries for the swing, but Dante grabs Darius’s hands to block it. Claudio instead gets the swing with Darius.
Darius and Dante hit a series of double team movies for near falls and then Darius is tagged in. They try a double suplex but Claudio reverses and suplexes both members of Top Flight. Top Flight then this a series of combination moves for a two count broken up by Mox. All four men are fighting in the ring and Dante is tossed into Mox on the floor and Darius gets a Spanish Fly for a two count on Claudio.
Darius gets a back slide for two and Claudio follows with a neutralizer for a two count. Claudio argues with the Ref and the then hits the hammer and anvil elbows. Dante tries to stop him but Mox hits the King Kong lariat. Darius is out and barely able to stand up. He gets a punch at Claudio, but Claudio fires back with an uppercut, the pin and the win.
Winners: Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli
We are told we are waiting on a medical update on Wardlow. Renee is with the Best Friends and Kip Sabian. Kip says its time for him to get a title shot. Trent says he eliminated Kip so Cassidy says that Trent gets a title shot before Kip on Rampage.
Hook w/His Unfortunate Hair (FTW Champion) vs The Already In The Ring Making His AEW Debut Baylon Lynx
Less than 90 seconds before the Redrum.
Winner: Hook
After the match, Stokley Hathaway, Lee Moriarty and Big Bill come out and say he is the Southwest Airlines of AEW. As they get to the ring, Jungle Boy runs to the ring and attacks Lee. Big Bill is in the ring with Hook and Hook is unfazed. Big Bill lifts Hook for a choke slam but JB hits Bill with a 2 by 4 and they run Big Bill and Lee Moriarty off.
We get a video showing how Chris Jericho has had a terrible last few weeks. We then get a promo from Jericho where he says Ricky Starks was foolish to turn them down. He says Starks doesn’t have the tool, but he does and he will beat him down on next week’s Dynamite. Jericho then tells Action Andretti not to come back to AEW.
We see Swerve Strickland in the back with Parker Bordeaux and someone else he says he will tell us about later. Wheeler Yuta challenges Swerve to a match on Friday.
In the back, The Elite are already fighting with Death Triangle in the back.

They brawl in the back and if you think I am going to give play by play of these spot machines, you have too much faith in me. I’ll just be giving highlights.
Pac hits a back flip off risers into the Bucks
Matt and Pac brawl from the back to the stage.
Nick and Penta join them
Rey is on top of an entryway and hits a tornado leap onto everyone
Kenny comes out of nowhere for a V Trigger onto Reey
Matt does the series of Northern Lights Suplexes on Pac and then adds Rey to them down to the ring.
They are in the ring when we come back from picture in picture and Kenny is taking the beat down.
Everyone gets to his a finisher on a member of the other team.
Kenny takes a trash can to Pac for a V Trigger
Kenny gets a doctor bomb on the trash can
Lucha Bros get a fear factor on Kenny on the floor for a two count
Chairs are tossed at people’s heads
BTE trigger on Penta but Pac breaks up the pin
Pac lock on the Brutalizer and Kenny hits the one winged angel through a table in the crowd for the pin and the win
Matt taps out to the Brutalizer after the pin.
Winners and now tied 3 to 3: The Elite
It will be decided with a ladder match on 1/11/2023.

Tay Melo and Anna Jay vs Ruby Soho and Willow Nightingale
We do get Taz “singing” Ruby’s entrance theme
Tay starts by twerking, and Willow uses that to attack and when she breaks out of a waistlock by Tay, she twerks as well. Ruby tags herself in, and Willow is not happy about it. Tay tags out and Ruby takes down Anna and pounds her with rapid blows. They work to their feet and Anna tosses Ruby to the ropes, allows Ruby to do it again. Willow is tagged in and Ruby leave Anna with a kick to the spine. Willow hits a scoop and a slam
Ruby gets an assisted Casadora and Willow rams Anna in the corner, hits a cross body and a two count. As Anna attacks Willow, Tay pulls Ruby off the apron. Anna takes Willow to her corner, so it’s double teaming and quick tags as we go picture in picture.
When we return to full screen, Tay and Anna are keeping Willow in their corner. Willow is able to get a clothesline on Anna and both crawl to their corners. Tay and Ruby and tagged in and she just pummels the hell out fo Tay. Ruby slams Tay into the turnbuckle pay and Ruby runs after Anna. She chases Anna into the ring and Ruby hits the No Future on Tay for two. Tay punches Ruby and hits a pump kick on Willow. All four women are down.
Anna is tossed by Willow and Willow get a kick on Tay and Ruby hits a back drop for a two broken up by Anna. Ruby is hit by a DD Tay, but Willow breaks it up at two. Willow hits a snap suplex on Anna on the floor. Ruby and Tay trade chops. Then head butts. They drop to the mat with Ruby on top for a two.
Anna grabs a chair from under the ring, but the ref takes the chair from her. Across the ring, Tay tosses a chair at Ruby, then kicks it and hits the Tay KO for the pin and the win.
Winners: Anna Jay and Tay Melo
Tay gives the crowd the double bird as we go to the back with Lexi Nair. She asks why they are leaving during Dynamite, and they say they have a reservation they have to get to and they will talk about their win over FTR next week.
Renee is with Ricky Starks. He talks about Action Andretti recovering from the fireball. He explains he will take Chris Jericho down several notches.
Samoa Joe (TNT Champion) vs Wardlow
Joe says that Wardlow is suffering from Stage Fright and he won’t be out to fight last night. Wardlow storms out without music shoving staff aside.
He gets in the ring and beats down Joe in the corner with blows and shoulder thrusts. He whips Joe into the ropes and shoulder tackles, but he can’t put any weight on his leg. He then hits a spine buster on Joe and lays in with blows.
Wardlow knocks Joe onto the ropes and chokes him for a count of four. He goes for a clothesline in the corner, but Joe is able to slam him down to the mat. Joe lays in chops and comes off the ropes into a clothesline from Wardlow. Wardlow goes back to right hands in the corner. Joe is able to get out of the corner and reverse a whip into as knee breaker as we go picture in picture.
When we return to full screen, Wardlow is outside the ring trying to get his leg feeling better. He gets into the ring, and Joe takes him down. He stomps Wardlow’s leg and then hits him with chops in the corner. He knocks Wardlow down and stretches Wardlow’s leg. He puts Wardlow on top and gives more chops. Joe joins Wardlow on the top and Wardlow tries to fight fee. He knows Joe down and goes up and hits a Senton Atomico.
Both men are struggling to get up. They throw hands in the middle of the ring. Wardlow hits a pair of German Suplexes. He whips Joe into corner for a charge. Joe whips Wardlow to the corner and he leaps up for a back flip onto Joe. He tweaks his leg so he is slow to get up. Wardlow flips Joe over his back and hits a head butt and covers for two.
Joe hits a leg sweep on Wardlow. Joe heads to the corner to hit kicks and chops on Wardlow. Wardlow is able to escape under Joe as Joe goes up and he slams Joe. He tries for a power bomb, but his legs buckle. Joe hits a chop block and locks on the rear choke. Wardlow passes out.
Winner and still TNT Champion: Samoa Joe
Joe waits for Wardlow to get up and then knocks him down again. Joe leaves the ring and grabs a tool box from under the ring. He doesn’t find what he wants and tosses it aside. Joe finds scissors. He comes back in the ring and it looks like Wardlow’s hair is not long for this world. Joe knocks down the ref and claims Wardlow’s hair.
We hear Darby Allin’s music, but he’s not coming from the entryway.
Darby nails Joe from behind with his skateboard. As Joe back up the ramp, we are desperately out of time!
