HOW IMPORTANT ARE NAMES IN WRESTLING

By Kendall Jenkins on 2022-12-23 07:45:00

When you watch WWE, you probably rarely stop to think about why the wrestlers are named as they are. If you take a step back from the action, though, and assess the roster, these pro athletes go by some amazing stage names.

Some titles are related to popular culture and reference characters that viewers may have some knowledge of. Others happen by chance, end up sticking, and eventually become legendary. It could be argued that, if some wrestlers had been given different names, they may not have had the same success.

Many Turn to Ancient Greece

Ancient Greek mythology is so prevalent in popular culture that many people know the key characters from that era. Numerous wrestlers have turned to the stories from thousands of years ago when devising their ring names, with a couple of the current most notable ones being Athena and Apollo Creed.

One factor that influences wrestlers to turn to ancient Greek names is the fact that most people who engage with mainstream entertainment will be familiar with them. In gaming, for instance, the God of War and Assassin’s Creed franchises have taught people about the era. Then there are all the ancient Greek slots like Zeus' Ancient Fortunes and Amazing Link Poseidon. These games can often be played with online casino promotions, which include free spins and happy hour. Simply the draw of ancient Greece and the iconic imagery on the thumbnails is enough to attract many players.

Aside from their notoriety in entertainment, Greek names also convey qualities that wrestlers want to project. Athena was the goddess of warfare, so the wrestler of the same name is always ready for battle. Apollo was known for his Olympian strength and variety of skills, which is something that Apollo Creed wants to reflect in his persona.

Some Names Were Just Meant to Be

When Steve Austin first started wrestling, he was using the name, Steve Williams. It turned out that there was already a well-established Steve Williams known as Dr. Death, so the future WWE legend had to change his name. He couldn’t think of one on the spot, so Dutch Mantell named him Steve Austin. Later known as Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Texas Rattlesnake became one of the main stars that made the WWE what it is today. The question is if he'd stuck with Steve Williams, would he have grown into such an icon?

The Undertaker is another example of a wrestler who may not have had the same career if he hadn’t had his famous name. He tried out various ring personas before the one that eventually stuck, including Commando, Mark Callous, and Dice Morgan. After being rebranded as The Undertaker for WWF, the three-time World Heavyweight Champion grew into the dark and mysterious character that fans know and love. There’s no doubt that he’s one of the most recognisable faces ever to step into the square circle.

Anyone perusing a career in wrestling would be wise to take some time and ponder their stage name carefully. The power of these titles can push athletes on their career trajectories and turn them into icons. The wrong name may not have quite the same effect.
