The latest round of cuts at Warner Bros. Discovery, who own AEW's broadcast cable homes TNT and TBS include the former President of those networks, Nancy Daniels. Daniels had been with Discovery for many, many years prior to the WBD merger and taken over content oversight for the Turner networks in May of this year.
Her departure is very surprising given her track record for Discovery, including launching the insanely popular and profitable 90 Day Fiance franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter has acquired and reprinted the complete memo announcing the changes, which noted, "Nancy has been such a terrific leader and partner at our company for 15 years where she initially oversaw programming for TLC, including the successful launch and expansion of the 90 Day Fiance franchise. Since 2018, she served as Chief Brand Officer for Discovery & Factual and, most recently, has been the Content Leader for T-Nets, Discovery, Animal Planet and Science Channel. In addition to shepherding such successful series as Gold Rush, Street Outlaws, and the Emmy-winning Deadliest Catch, Nancy spearheaded the launch of top discovery+ originals including Naked & Afraid of Love and Love Off the Grid. She also drove the growth and success of such popular event programming as Puppy Bowl and Shark Week. We are enormously grateful for Nancy’s leadership, accomplishments, and commitment and wish her much success in her future endeavors."
AEW President Tony Khan praised Daniels and Scott Lewers (who oversaw franchise series expansions and tentpole programming and also departed WBD today) while talking to Variety this past October, noting they had offered AEW "tremendous support" while commenting, "They’ve integrated us into the new company and given us the opportunity to be involved in their most valuable intellectual property and weave it into AEW,” he said. “It’s really exciting.” Those integrations include themed episodes around both “Shark Week” and the launch of HBO’s “House of the Dragon.”
At the time, Khan also described AEW's move to TBS as a “big success for us,” saying that that the time since the move “is the hottest we’ve been this whole year.”
Jason Sarlanis, who has been overseeing ID and HLN crime content, will now oversee the Turner Networks. There is obviously no word yet how any of this may impact AEW programming from a content perspective.
