Blackjack: The timeline of a casino classic

With the advancement of technology, the variety and number of games available at the touch of a button are always evolving and growing.

With numerous themes awaiting players, the classics still remain on top for many players such as Roulette, Blackjack and Poker. Not to mention the casino promotions and offers available to enhance your gaming experience.

With this in mind, we wanted to explore one of these top games further – Blackjack - to possibly introduce new players to the game, or for existing players to refresh their gameplay know-how.

So, pull up a chair and join us at the Blackjack table to delve a little deeper…

Blackjack: Where it all began

There’s a theory floating around among historians, that Blackjack originates from the Romans. It’s said that they used to use wooden blocks with painted numbers on to play a game close to that of Blackjack. With rumours of Romans loving a gamble, it could be possible this is true, however, as there’s no concrete evidence to back this up, this will stay a myth until proven.

With no evidence to back up these claims, researchers and historians alike have agreed upon the theory that Blackjack actually originates from the 1700s in France, where a few card games merged together to create a game called Vingt-et-Un, which translates to Twenty-One.

The love for the game grew within France until all casinos were banned, so when French colonists reached the shores of America in the 18th century, they took the game with them, introducing a new audience to the world of Twenty-One.

Players in America would enjoy a game or two of Twenty-One within legalized gambling halls in places such as New Orleans in 1820. During this time, a French lady who had immigrated to America was travelling around the USA, called Eleanor Dumont, who was a very skilled dealer, whose skills were known all over the country. When she opened her own gambling hall in Nevada City, California, which she ironically called Vingt-et-Un, players flocked to her venue to play a game of Twenty-One against her, to witness her incredible skills first-hand.

Blackjack: The Modern Day

As we entered the 20th century, players were still calling the game Twenty-One, but this was all about to change. Gambling halls and venues were looking for a way to promote the game to new players, as well as draw people into their establishments. They decided to offer players bonus payouts, including one that paid extra when your hand contained the Ace of Spades alongside either one of the black Jacks within the deck at play; the Jack of Clubs or the Jack of Spades. This created a buzz amongst players and the popularity of the game grew. As the bonuses faded out, the name Blackjack stuck.

As the years ticked by, technology advanced and the introduction of the internet welcomed new and exciting ways to experience casino games from the comfort of your home, or wherever and whenever you fancied a game of online Blackjack. With the game more accessible to players, Blackjack has only grown in popularity, helping it to remain on top and thrive within an ever-changing casino industry.
