It is Wednesday and it’s time for AEW Dynamite from Washington DC at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, Taz, and William Regal,
MJF vs Wheeler Yuta
MJF is 16 and 2 in AEW, and they state it’s 129 days since his last match. For someone who is such a huge homegrown star, for him not to have 20 matches over three years is pretty amazing.
The match start showing the style differences between the two of them with MJF showing old school heel behavior, and Yuta using a version of Strong Style with speed, stiff shots and a feeling of pressing any advantage he gets. MJF gets the advantage as we go into commercial, He argues with the ref at every opportunity, breaks on the last possible count, and taunting the crowd.
MJF does all of the small things that make a difference such as begging when Yuta takes him into a German Suplex, great facial expressions of being smug when he’s winning and shocked when losing.
As they move toward the last third fo the match, MJF catches Yuta and power bombs him onto his knee. They work a nice sequence of near falls as they constantly reverse each other for one and two counts. They repeat it with a different hold right after. MJF and Yuta take until an 8 count to get up and then move to fighting in the corner. They take their time setting up a Rana from the top and MJF sells like Shawn Michaels in 1995.
Yuta goes to the top where MJF has been rolling out of the way for most of the match. MJF flips him off and Yuta leaps all the way onto MJF. Really impressive by Yuta. Yuta hits the Hammer and Anvil elbows and tries to lock on the seat belt, but MJF reverses it to the Salt of the Earth for the win.
Winner: MJF
MJF had to win his comeback match, but Yuta looked strong. I also liked that MJF did not cheat to win, since it made him look strong.
Afterward, Yuta holds out his hand for a handshake as a show of respect. MJF goes to shake his hand and takes him time, but Lee Moriarty attacks Yuta from behind. MJF says he didn’t ask Lee to do that. Stokely Hathaway gives MJF the Dynamite Diamond.
Willian Regal walks down to the ring with brass knuckles. When Regal gets in the ring, Lee tosses Yuta out of the ring. Leaving Regal and MJF face to face. MJF leaves and we go to a video giving the history behind the main event.
The Jericho Appreciation Society all talk about how Daniel Garcia is ungrateful and if he doesn’t make the right decision, they will end him.
Jay Lethal vs Darby Allin
They start off with a series of standing switches and mat wrestling. Darby looks much better when wrestling someone his own size, and he has shown that he can do mat wrestling. Darby asks for the handshake after their first series, and Lethal refuses and takes control of the match. Lethal starts working on Darby’s leg.
Darby usually works a match by having some sort of handicap, and with Lethal going after the leg as setting him up for a figure four works to both men’s strength. Lethal is turning every attack into an opportunity to work on the leg. Lethal hits an avalanche Dragon Screw and goes right into a figure four.
No matter where he works, Lethan is an expert at working a match tailored to his opponent. Darby is able to escape, and when Lethal goes for the Lethal Injection, Darby is able to duck under it. This is when Sonjay Dutt and Satnam Singh come from the back. Lethal tells them he doesn’t need them. Darby takes advantage of the distraction and gets the Last Supper for the win.
Winner: Darby Allin
Darby calls for the handshake saying the Lethal doesn’t need them. Lethal grabs his hand and then storms to the back, not speaking to Sonjay and Singh.
We see footage of Brian Cage and the Embassy.
TNT Championship: Wardlow (champion) vs. Brian Cage (with Prince Nana)
Been a long time since we’ve seen Brian Cage. Wardlow gets a huge reaction on his way to the ring. Cage actually looks bigger than Wardlow.
Odd bit of history here where Cage was given the “Turning on his team to become a babyface” story, same as Wardlow, and they blew it with him, Now he’s turned heel and has been on the sidelines for almost a year.
Wardlow and Cage have a hoss fight, just tossing each other around and beating the tar out of each other. They fight through the commercial, and when they come back, Wardlow hits a Senton after running up the ropes. Wardlow hits a series of German suplexes. Cage is able to bing Wardlow in with a suplex that shocked the crowd with the size of both men.
Cage is able to get near falls after power moves. Wardlow hits a pair of head butts, easily my least favorite kind of butt. Wardlow then hits the windup lariat and it’s time for the power bomb symphony. 4 power bombs later, Wardlow covers for the win.
Winner and still TNT Champion: Wardlow
Wardlow gets the big win, but Cage looked like a legit competitor against him, which is important if they are going to be using him.
After the match, The Embassy attacks, and Samoa Joe with FTR come to the ring to drive them off.
Toni Storm, Athena, and Willow Nightingale vs Penelope Ford, Serena Deeb, and Jamie Hayter
Both Saraya and Britt Baker come out with their respective teams.
Willow and Hayter look to start off, but Ford tags in from Hayter and Athena tags in from Willow. When they run the ropes, it’s fast and incredibly visual. Glad the camera pulled back, since that is something that looks better when seen from further away so you can judge the speed better.
We then get Storm and Deeb, and any time they are in the ring together, it’s fantastic. They work stiff and everything looks smooth.
And when we get back from the commercial, the tag team siren goes off and everyone is in the ring for a bit. Storm is able to get the hot tag to Willow who gets to beat down Jamie Hayter. Deeb tags in after the near fall and she is the workhorse of this match. Saraya stops the interference from Rebel.
It’s then time for each person to come in and take out the person who just came in, ending with Ford getting a cutter on Willow for a two count. Willow is able to get the Doctor Bomb on Ford and covers for the win.
Winners: Toni Storm, Athena, and Willow Nightingale
After the match, Saraya and Britt Baker throw hands so that everyone is fighting. It ends with Rebel in the ring begging for mercy from Saraya who drops her with a kick.
So, we have had an attack or an attempted attack after every single match so far.
In the back, Rush and Jose show that Private Party have not been showing up to help Rush. Private party is told they need to show up if needed or they will be taken to court, since they know Matt Hardy has been tampering with their contract.
I guess Vince McMahon isn’t the only one who brings his personal issues into wrestling storylines.
Next up, it’s national scissoring day as The Acclaimed come to the ring. Even Alton Brown was tweeting about it with Lucky Yates, who does voices on Archer.
They have a podium in the ring. Bowens cuts a baby face promo and lets us know that the Scissor Me Daddy Ass shirt is the top selling shirt for 2022. He then starts running down Swerve Strickland, calling him Sneaky Swerve.
Billy Gunn then steps up to the mic. He proclaims that this is Daddy Ass’s house. He then presents The Acclaimed with a big set of ceremonial scissors.
Max Caster’s turn and he asks everyone to scissor their neighbors as if it’s church. Max gives a pure babyface promo and gets the crowd hyper.
Swerve Strickland then comes out. The crowd is booing him almost as loudly as they did MJF. Swerve runs them down as benign bad role models. He then challenges Billy Gunn to a match next week.
Mark Sterling says that he has been telling people that Swerve is a jerk for a long time but no one listened. He then says that the Acclaimed need him for their fight with Swerve. So, Mark gets taken out by the Acclaimed and Billy accepts Swerve's challenge.
We get a video from Dark Order where they says they will take the trio championship on the anniversary of Brodie Lee’s last match.
Tony is in the back with Madison Rayne and Skye Blue, and Madison says she is a rising star,. Tay and Anna Jay A.S. says she needs to be a sports entertainer. So, they’ll be in a tag team match on Rampage Friday.
Rush vs Adam Page
They start out with slaps and kicks. Looks like this is going to be a brawl. They go to the floor and Rush starts with slamming Page’s face into a chair, choking with a camera cord and more brawling.
When they go to picture in picture, I realize we’re in the last half hour of the show. AEW Dynamite just slides by, and even when I don’t like some of the booking, the show is fast paced and never has dead moments.
Page has been fighting from behind pretty much the entire match and when they return to full screen, he starts to fire up. If Rush has any deficit, its that he doesn’t do well when his opponent is supposed to be in control, and Rush doesn't do a whole lot to show he is trying to fight back or defend himself.
Page even looks like he’s struggling when he’s firing up to bring the fan into his struggle. After Jose stops a buckshot lariat, Rush gets a flurry of offense. Page is able to cut him off and get a buckshot lariat and the pin.
Winner: Adam Page
This match didn’t quite gel for me, with Rush going limp when he was taking Page’s offense.
Private Party comes out to the ring, and then Mox comes out of the crowd and gets into the ring with Private Party exiting.
Mox says he’s been waiting for this for three years. Mox says on October 18th, there will be one last man standing in AEW. Mox says Page is in his way of being the best in AEW. He admires Page, but when the bell rings, he doesn’t respect anyone. Page says if he’s been waiting so long, why is he leaving right now.
Mox says Page is a sweet kid, but his mouth will get him in trouble and this is his final warning. He has 13 days.
In the back, Tony is with Willow Nightingale. She challenges for the TBS title, which calls out the Baddies. Willow has a decent comeback to Jade Cargill.
Luchasaurus vs Fuego Del Sol
Well, that took two moves.
Winner: Luchasaurus
When Luchasaurus goes to hit the Razor’s Edge on Fuego, but Jungle Boy breaks it up with a chair. He says he will break Luchasaurus and he can pick the time and place. Cage says that the time is next week, and the place in Cage’s home town, Toronto.
Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara vs Daniel Garcia and Bryan Danielson
Ian Riccaboni joins commentary.
Jericho and Garcia observe the code of honor, and the announcers say that the code of honor has been a part of the show all night. Garcia takes Jericho down and shows a lot of disrespect as Jericho is down. As Garcia is the Ring of Honor Pure Champion and Jericho cheated to become Ring of Honor champion, I like how Garcia has a bone to pick with Jericho, rather than a “You treated me badly in your group.”
We then get Guevara and Danielson, and Sammy does have the chops to hang with Danielson, even if he falls back on high spots more often than not. They fight on the small screen, with Danielson and Guevara trading submission holds.
Garcia gets the hot tag, but Jericho slows down when he tags in and they go face to face. Sammy tries to leap in and Garcia just drops him with a strike. Garcia then explodes on Jericho and batters Jericho.
Jericho tags out after Garcia gets his knees up on a Lionsault. When Garica has a submission on Garcia, Jericho runs in and Danielson takes him down and they do town attacks on Sammy and Jericho.
Sammy is able to break free and he takes over Garcia is able to fight back and he takes the moves Guevara dishes out. Outside the ring, Jericho puts Danielson through the timekeeper’s table with the Ring of Honor title belt on it. In the ring, Guevara get the GTH and Guevara takes his time to get to the top. He goes for a shooting star press and Garcia gets his knees up and locks on the Dragon Slayer. Jericho pops Garcia with the title when the ref isn’t looking, and Guevara is able to take advantage with a cover and a win.
Winners: Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara
