The third episode of WOW - Women of Wrestling aired over the weekend. If you would like coverage of the first two, let me know as I still have them on my DVR. Our commentary team is David McLane, Steven Dickey, and AJ Mendez.
If you haven’t even seen WOW, most everyone has an over the top gimmick much like GLOW in the 1980’s. It’s syndicated, so it may show at different times depending when you live on weekend days. Here in the Minneapolis area, it is on at 1 pm and 10 pm on Saturdays.
Each episode has a title, and this week’s is Tag Me In.
We start with a recap of the first two episodes.
Siren the Voodoo Doll and Chainsaw vs The Bully Busters (Kita Rush and Stephy Slays) - Tag Team Elimination Tournament
Chainsaw is released from her straightjacket.
Stephy and Siren start out the match with Stephy getting drop kicks before Chainsaw is tagged in. Chainsaw is then able to toss Stephy around the ring and keeps control. Chainsaw misses in the corner and Kita tags on and gets a flurry of offense before Chainsaw starts tossing her around.
Siren tags in and keeps control in her corner. We then get Siren and Chainsaw tagging in and out and keeping KIta in their corner. Chainsaw wins with a splash on Kita.
Winners and moving on are Siren and Chainsaw.
David interviews them about their victory. Chainsaw just growls, and Siren says they are here to take over the tag team titles.
We get a campy intro to the Disciplinarian and how she would lose her temper in the ring to lose matches. Her manager Samantha Smart put her in Anger Management classes to correct that and tonight we see if it worked.
The Disciplinarian vs Chantilly Chella
The story of the match is that Chella is a fun loving class clown type and the Disciplinarian was the mean teacher who thinks people need more discipline.
They start with running the ropes and headlocks, but after Chella is tossed outside the ring, Disciplinarian starts beating her down. Chella is able to get a series of kicks for a two count. As Disciplinarian gets a series of attacks and a two count. She starts shouting at the referee, and seems like she is about to lose her cool.
Smart gets on the apron and goes to hit Chella, but Chella gets out of the way. Disciplinarian and Smart have words and Chella knocks Smart off the apron and takes down Disciplinarian with a spin kick and covers for the three count.
Winner: Chantilly Chella
We get a video package about Commander Sahara Spars. She discusses getting into wrestling when she was younger, and when she left the business, she became an alcoholic. She turned her life around and joined the Coast Guard. In 2019, she got back into wrestling. She now wants to be a mom and a role model for her daughter.
One thing I will say about WOW is that they DO take time to get their characters over, even if most of them are silly. Just in a five minute segment, we know everything we need to understand and root for Spars.
Gigi Giani vs Sahara Spars
Gigi’s gimmick is that she’s the most fashionable woman in wrestling.
Spars works a nice series of waistlocks and arm tosses into a pin. Spars is the first person on the show that looks smooth in the ring. Gigi works over Spars in the corner with stomps and kicks. She keeps control with a two count, snap mare and further near falls. When Gigi tries to mock Spars with a slap.
Spars fires up and gets in a series of blows, but Gigi cuts her off with a bicycle kick. The match then moves to Spars making a big move for a two, and then Gigi making a big move for a tow count. It ends with Spars hitting the Commander Knee where she drapes a leg over the person’s head and then a spinning slam for the three count and the win.
Winner: Commander Spars
Spars was solid in this match and made it look better than the first two matches.
We get a video package about Penelope Pink, who is full of herself. She is the new protege of Lana Star, and they have spent the day at Rodeo Drive. She brings Pink to Hollywood’s Biggest Agent, who signs her to a deal. Much campier than the Spars video package and feels like old school GLOW.
Penelope Pink vs. Vivian Rivera
Lana Star has the mic and asks everyone to stand up for Penelope Pink.
Vivian calls herself “The Rose in the Concrete” as she grew up in a rough neighborhood and gives back as a social worker.
Rivera takes down Pink twice, but Pink then moves to headlocks. Rivera is able to escape and hits a Russian Leg Sweep into a two count. PInk is able to take over after that and when she isn’t attacking, Star is either trash talking or pulling hair when the ref is distracted. The match moves to Pink dominating, with Rivera able to get a move or two in before Pink takes control again.
Rivera gets a double underhook facebuster during a flurry that looked impressive into a two count. She then follows with a neckbreaker into a two count. Star tries to interfere again, and Pink takes advantage of the distraction to hit a thumb to the eye. Pink then gets a running knee and a three count.
Winner: Penelope Pink
If you felt the addition of AJ Mendez would change WOW, it has not. It’s mostly campy characters in OK to below OK matches. In a lot of ways, they wrestle like a small promotion made of trainees, with Spars above the other performers. They do take time to let you get to know the characters, and the show does look professionally put together.
