Pro Wrestling NOAH announced this evening that AEW star Sting will return to Japan to take part in The Great Muta's retirement match in Yokohama, Japan on 1/22/23.
Should Sting wrestle as part of Muta's retirement bout, it would be his first match in Japan since 9/23/96, where he teamed with Lex Luger to defeat Steven (William) Regal and Arn Anderson, also at the Yokohama Arena during a New Japan Pro Wrestling event.
Sting and Muta famously feuded over the NWA World Television Championship in 1989, a feud that led to Sting teaming with longtime rival Ric Flair against The Great Muta and Terry Funk in the main event of the first-ever Halloween Havoc PPV in Philadelphia. Muta would leave WCW in 1990 for New Japan Pro Wrestling, but the two would wrestle each other and even team together in NJPW.
Before their reunion on last night's AEW Rampage episode, the last time Muta and Sting shared a ring together on national TV was WCW's Fall Brawl 2000 PPV in a three-way bout with Vampiro. Sting and Muta last teamed to defeat Diamond Dallas Page and Satoshi Kojima in 2004 in Hawaii for independent promotion HCW.
