The excellent wrestling-themed drama "The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity" will open a new run in Los Angeles tonight at the Chance Theater, running through late October.
The play, which was nominated for a 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, features the following plot:
Experience pro wrestling in a whole new light — or perhaps for the first time — in Kristoffer Diaz’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play. Chad Deity follows the life of wrestler Macedonio Guerra. As a lifelong fan, he has followed wrestling only to become a “jobber,” one who is paid to lose to bigger-name stars in the ring. Macedonio meets Vigneshwar Paduar, and together they find a way to push it to the limit and say what needs to be said. But will it finally get Mace his big shot at Chad Deity himself? Unspoken racism, politics, and courage are all woven into this play that leaves it all on the mat
The show was first produced in Chicago in 2009 and had runs Off-Broadway and in a number of other markets. The production features a wrestling ring onstage as well as Titan-tron like screens for ring entrance videos, but is more focused on the backstage aspects of the business. A number of names that will be familiar to hardcore fans are name-dropped in the dialogue but one doesn't need to be a wrestling fan to understand or appreciate the drama of the story.
If you get the chance, I absolutely suggest seeing the show.
