It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is coming live from the Key Band Center from Buffalo NY. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.
So, think this episode might be a little newsworthy?
We start with a recap of the shocking events at the end of All Out on Sunday. No, no, no, not the media scrum, the reveal that MJF is back and he won the Casino Battle Royal. We then go to Tony Khan’s announcements about the AEW Heavyweight Title and Trios titles being vacated.
We will get the Best Friends with Orange Cassidy vs Death Triangle for the Trios title.
And we will have a tournament for the AEW Heavyweight title.
Thankfully, No interim titles.
MJF is now back on live TV with a mic. Crowd is cheering him like a conquering hero. He’s even wearing a Buffalo Bills jersey. He says he was just kidding when he made fun of the fans and he is utterly over the top disingenuous about being a white meat babyface. He says he won’t be in the title tournament because he doesn’t need it, the chip he won allows him to challenge for the title whenever he wants.
After he finishes up, Jon Moxley is in the house and he comes through the crowd. Mox says that MJF is full of crap, and MJF then turns on the crowd on the local football team. That didn’t take long. He says that he wants the title as a bargaining chip, and then starts talking about taking it to WWE. Mox then slaps the mic out of his hand. Mox says it’s not the time or place and MJF needs to leave the ring. MJF and Mox square off, with MJF having trouble getting his shirt off. MJF then bails from the ring and Mox tells him his theme music sucks.
Mox then gives a rah rah speech about how the Belt represents all that is good and Wonderful in professionally wrestling. Mpx goes over how great the roster is and how everyone in the tournament is fantastic. He says he wants the ball and this isn’t just winning time, it’s time to be a legend.
Great Rah Rah speech and something the fans in attendance needed after the chaos of the last week.
Death Triangle vs The Best Friends for the Trios title
New ring entrance for Death Triangle.
Pac tags out when he sees he’d be facing Orange Cassidy, which is a nice subtle nod to their ongoing feud. Penta and Cassidy have their silliness and then the tag team siren goes off and it’s all action with everyone getting a turn in the ring. It then becomes lots o’ spots as we go through the small screen.
Trent is the member of the Best Friends who gets to take the beating to build up audience heat. Even when Pac has to take a fall, he makes it look brutal on himself. They give Pac a chance to beat the crap out of Cassidy. We even get Pac kicking Danhausen in the face when Danhausen is trying to curse him. I love that Pac has no time for the silliness and just reacts by punching or kicking someone in the face.
We then move to the spot fest portion of the match, and the crowd is on fire for this, and they are all right with either team winning. Pac wins with a black arrow on Chuck Taylor and a fun, crazy, car crash of a match.
Winners and NEW Trios Champions: Death Triangle.
The Dark Order is with Tony, and Andrade and his assistant shows up wanting to sign 10, who says he is willing to listen.
Tony Schiavone is with Sammy Guevara and Chris Jericho with Tay Melo and Anna JAS. They are excited over Jericho's win Sunday. Jericho declares the locker room HIS! They're both looking forward to the AEW World Title Tournament.
Tony is with The Jericho Appreciation Society. Jericho says he has found the fountain of youth. He says he will beat Danielson next week and go on to win the AEW championship. Sammy then says he will beat Darby Allin on Friday in the tournament. Jericho then says that Matt Miller is on his own tonight.
Wardlow (TNT Champion) vs Tony Nese
Tony gets to take a bunch of power bombs to make the crowd happy.
This is how they need to treat Wardlow for a while. No more multi man matches, no more trios matches, just powerbombs and pins.
Winner: Wardlow
Mark Sterling is about to get powerbombed but he’s saved by Josh Woods.
Wardlow gives a brief promo that this is Wardlow’s world.
We get a video package about the long time feud between Sammy Guevara and Darby Allin.
Bryan Danielson vs Adam Page (Who isn’t suspended) in the AEW Title Tournament.
William Regal joins commentary.
Page calls for a handshake and Bryan shakes it off. They start with mat wrestling going hold for hold. Nice contrast to the previous matches, and when you have that contrast, the matches stand out. As the match moves forward, it becomes Page’s big chops and kicks and Bryan tries to bring it back down to mat work.
Bryan is working on Page’s lariat arm and Page is still going for the big strength moves as it goes on. As is usual with Bryan, the story of this match is so well put together that it’s a joy to watch. Page has been used poorly since he lost the title, but a few big matches and some promos about who he is will reverse that trend.
All of Bryan’s “Yes kicks” are on Page’s lariat arm. And the match is going into a third segment. Going into tonight’s show, Tony had to let the fans know that AEW is all right. Having a match with a home grown talent and an acquired talent is a good way to do that, but having it go long and be this good is something to make fans happy.
The third segment is a fantastic series of finishing moves, submission attempts and near falls. Bryan wins with a Okana roll after dodging the Buckshot. Page came up a huge step, even in the loss.
Winner and moving on in the Title Tournament: Bryan Danielson
We then get a video package about how Jungle Boy vowing revenge against Christian Cage and Luchasaurus.
We come back from the commercial with Stokely Hathaway explaining why he got involved int he ladder match. A stage hand tells Stokely that they are low on time, and Stokely nails him with a mic and the rest of Hathaway's group beat him down.
Wheeler Yuta (Ring of Honor Pure Champion) vs. Daniel Garcia
I dunno who the rapper is that they had introduce the match, but bring back The Acclaimed. Dude was rapping about bread and bananas? I guess that’s why Max Caster didn’t get to do a rap this week.
Caprice Coleman and William Regal join commentary and Excalibur explains the rules of the Pure Title.
The match starts with a series of lockups with no one getting a real advantage. Garcia has the crowd on his side, since he is from Buffalo. After the commercial break, we move to strikes from each. Garcia shows a lot of fire in this section of the match, his facial expressionas telling a story of how frustrated he is getting of how Yuta isn’t taking him seriously.
There’s a serious, deliberate pace to the match as well, and again, it sets the match apart from the matches earlier in the card, which were fast paced spot fests. Garcia has a sequence where he hits a series of German Suplexes on Yuta, holding on with each one. As it goes on, Yuta is trying to get a rope break, but Garcia is keeping him away from the ropes.
This match ALSO goes into a third segment, and it deserves it. As the segment starts, both men are down after a super plex. They start a slap fight and Garcia is able to knock down Yuta. Yuta gets up at 8 and Garcia locks on the Dragon Tamer. Yuta gets a rope break, so each man has used a rope break, since Garcia used one during the commercial. Yuta then usus a closed fist and is given a warning.
Garcia locks on another Dragon Tamer and Yuta reverses it. Yutas keeps trying different finishers and Garcia keeps locking on the Dragon Tamer. Because he can’t get out, Yuta has to tap out.
Winner and NEW Ring of Honor Pure Champion: Daniel Garcia.
Bryan Danielson comes to the ring. Yuta and Garcia shake hands and Bryan is the one who puts the title on Garcia. Jericho comes out and watches on the stage as Bryan and Garcia shake hands.
