WWE will present their first-ever Clash at the Castle this Saturday 9/3 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Here is our take on what will happen.
Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre.
Dave: This should be great and the build for it has been strong. I can already feel the Triple H "I can make a case for both talents to win" booking here, and I like it. I think Drew puts up a valiant fight but the odds are too steep with The Bloodline, and maybe a Paul Heyman return. Or even a new Use, like Solo Sikoa debuts. Roman retains, but the fires of the feud still burn.
Mike: The right thing to do, for the show, would be for Drew McIntyre to win the title. I was there the night that Daniel Bryan won the title at Summerslam and then Randy Orton cashed in and all of Los Angeles left dejected. It was one of the few times in the last decade you could feel people just seething as they left. I feel that's how it would be if Drew didn't get the belt, but it's also Wales, not Scotland, sooo while I think the right thing to do would be for Drew to win, but that's for the show, not the long-term benefit of the company. So, Drew is going to obviously look like he should win and then something dastardly happens and Roman retains.
Richard: As soon as they announced this show, my thought process has been 'Drew gets the Wrestlemania Moment he couldn't get winning at the PC at Wrestlemania in Wales' and it hasn't changed at this time. Roman has celebrated 2 years as champion and Drew doesn't need a run of that length, but it can happen between Survivor Series and Royal Rumble if they want to do Roman/Rock for the title at Mania. Drew will find a way to neutralize the Usos and Sami (maybe Tyson Fury or the next challengers for the tag titles). If Roman loses and the Usos (or other third parties) don't interfere, who can Roman blame for the loss? A Drew win could accelerate Theory's (hopeful) unsuccessful cash in.
WWE Smackdown Women's Liv Morgan vs. Shayna Baszler.
Dave: I love Liv and all but her Title reign has been a failure thanks to the old booker. Shayna on the main roster has been a failure for the same reason. Time to right two wrongs. HHH returns the NXT Shayna and Liv actually hangs in there and gets some credible offense in before having to tap. This should be a match where the loser gets elevated. I want to see killer Shayna on the main roster.
Mike: Liv needs to win, clean. Let Shayna be the killer and ragdoll her all over the place but Liv hits a big miracle move and gets the shocking win.
Richard: I had no problem with Liv winning the title at Money in the Bank, but they blew the pay off at SummerSlam. They got Ronda out of the match with the 'suspension' and put Shayna in the match (I think someone suggested this). Shayna was dominant in NXT and has been marginalized on the main roster, until she became the number one contender. If WWE wants to do something positive for the new champion, let her win in about 3 to 5 minutes (there is recent precedent) because this shouldn't go 10 minutes. With Shayna winning the title, you can have Ronda show up to congratulate her after the match (or on Friday) and then set up their match for the title to let Ronda get the title back in time to face Charlotte.
Alexa Bliss & Asuka & Raw Women's Champion Bianca Belair vs. Bayley & Iyo Sky & Dakota Kai.
Dave: Following their loss in the tag tournament, I see the heels go over here. Bayley scores a pin on the champ and their program begins.
Mike: I am with Dave here. Let this open the show and give them 20 minutes to kick this show off super hot with a fun six woman tag but in the end Bayley's crew needs to won so we continue to establish the heels and give the babyfaces something to chase coming out of the show. Hell, they could do three singles matches on Raw coming out of this and let them have an hour of the show given the talent here.
Richard: This is a match I am really looking forward to since I suggested a variation of this match (I had Becky teaming with Bianca and Alexa) during the SummerSlam Post Game Show. You don't need to have every title defended on every pay per view and if Bianca is pinned, you have an immediate challenger for the title. Iyo and Dakota should be pissed that they lost their chance for the tag titles on Monday, thanks in part to The Fresh Princesses of Belair. This will be a very good match but in the end, I think Bayley gets the pinfall on Bianca and we have our main event for either the 'season premiere' or the next PPV.
Seth Rollins vs. Matt Riddle.
Dave: Man, this really heated up on Monday. This HAS to be a war, a total war. Since Seth crossed the line with the family comment I have to put Riddle over here. With the new regime booking I think we get a more edgy Riddle and not the cartoon Vince booked.
Mike: This should be Riddle the pissed off killer trying to murder the man and succeeding, but getting DQ'd in the process. He won't lose anything because he beats the hell out of Seth and from the moral perspective, he's the winner because he's avenging the disrespect but he still didn't REALLY win and there's a war that's still going on. Imagine how shocked Randy Orton will be when he returns and sees THIS Riddle?
Richard: If they lock up to start off this match, Monday never happened. Riddle's history in MMA should be what gives him the advantage, but Seth should be able to hold his own with Riddle. This is a match where they need to add a stip to allow them to go beyond what we are going to see in any other match on the show. If Becky was not injured, I could see this getting to the point where Riddle pummels Seth to the point that Becky has to come out to 'throw in the towel' because Seth would never quit or give up.
WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER vs. Sheamus.
Dave: This will be a war. Sheamus is a beast and so is Gunther. I book this to give Guther a win in a war that shows people who don't know all that much about him how great he really is.
Mike: GUNTHER wins but come on, this is going to be so much fun. Sheamus has been one of the most underutilized talents in the company forever. In the words of the great Serizawa in Godzilla, LET THEM FIGHT.
Richard: I didn't expect to enjoy a match on this card more than the six woman tag match, but this is on the same level. Two European stars wrestling in Europe. Sheamus likes to hurt people. Gunther likes to hurt people. I like watching Gunther and Sheamus hurting people. I hope Ludwig, Butch, and Ridge don't get involved in the match, but they can brawl with each other outside the ring. Regardless of who wins the match . . .. THIS IS WRESTLING. I say Gunther retains, but don't make this the final time they meet.
Edge & Rey Mysterio with Dominik Mysterio vs. The Judgement Day's Finn Balor & Damian Priest with Rhea Ripley.
Dave: Edge beat Priest in Canada so I put the heels over here and continue the story of Dominik and Edge.
Mike: The real question I have it when does Beth start brawling with Rhea? I'm looking forward to that. The next PPV is Extreme Rules so I expect they will have some sort of heavy finish to set up a Philly Street Fight or something. I am with Dave here, Judgement Day should go up.
Richard: This match is the subtext for the blossoming relationship between Rhea and Dominik. Have you noticed how Dominik got 'cleaned up' for Rhea on this week's Raw to impress her. Getting back to the match, Edge is the better option than Dominik because he isn't Dominik. Will Balor have the fan support since he is the local star in the same ring as Edge and Rey? Priest has been having some good performances lately. Edge and Rey will be close to getting the victory, only to see Dominik turn on his father and Edge. Will he join THE Judgment Day or is he doing it to get some brownie points from Rhea?
