It is Wednesday and AEW Dynamite is coming live from the Now Arena in Chicago IL. Our commentary team is Jim Ross, Excalibur and Taz.
Jon Moxley is on his way to the ring, which is good, since we have a pay per view in 4 days and we don't know the main event yet. A sign in the front row reads “Just Enjoy Wrestling”, so I will take its advice. Mixed reaction for Moxley since it’s Punk’s home town. Mox says that Punk folded when he saw he’d have to take all of Mox’s attack, which the crowd doesn’t agree with.
Mox then says that Punk is fragile and weak and he’s ready to move on. He has an open contract for a title match for All Out, and he’s going to leave it in the ring. He puts himself over and leaves the ring. Ace Steele, one of the producers, comes front he back, and grabs the contract and stuffs it in the back pocket.
In the back, Jericho gives a generic promo against Bryan Danielson, and Daniel Garcia comes out and apologizes to Jericho. He says that Jericho doesn’t need any gimmicks or cheating to win.
Brian Danielson vs Jake Hager
William Regal and Chris Jericho join commentary.
Hager starts out with the upper hand, and when they go to the outside, Hager puts Bryan through the timekeeper’s table. Hager just looks like a beast as the match goes on, and he’s always been great in the ring. MOst people have felt that Hager can be a big star, and his work in AEW has been as Jericho’s enforcer, so we don't get to see him in the ring often enough to keep that reputation. After the commercial break, the match heats up with both men moving toward a MMA style match.
Danielson pulls out the win with a flurry of offense at the end, and it was a solid opening match to build up for Bryan vs Jericho.
Winner: Bryan Danielson
The Jericho Appreciation Society comes out and attacks Jericho and they are driven off by the Blackpool Combat Club. Jericho comes down to the ring with a chair to attack Bryan, but Daniel Garcia runs out from the back to grab the chair and echo his statement that Jericho doesn’t need to cheat. Jericho gets a flying knee from Bryan to build to their match.
When we come back from the ads, the Wingmen are in the ring to protest them not being on Dynamite. W. Morrissey comes to the ring, and it looks like the Wingmen are the sacrificial lambs to make him look like a monster. Peter Avalon does his over the top comedy sell job to end the segment. Stokely Hathaway produces one of his Business Cards and gives it to Mrrissey, and as they leave, Stokely threatens Tony Schiavone for daring to ask what’s going on.
In the back, Will Ospreay starts an interview, and Don Callas shows to passively aggressively praise Ospreay. Wou;ldn’t it be nice if we spent time with these interviews giving viewers an idea of someone who hasn’t been on the show an idea of who they are instead of just setting up the next match?
Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter vs Toni Storm and Hikaru Shida
All four of these women are in the four way match for the interim women’s championship on Sunday, so it’s an old school match to build to that match. The match seems to be a spotlight for Shida and Storm, and Storm is looking strong in this match. Everything she does is fast and looks strong.
The announcers remind us of the feud between Shida and Baker and it just reminds me how they seem to drop feuds the minute someone wins a title. Baker and Hayter come off a bit weak in this match, and I don’t know if that’s on purpose.
Winners: Toni Storm and Hikaru Shida
Much more one sided than I thought it would be.
Afterward they have Kip Sabian and Pac in a video package, and while Sabian hasn’t even seemed like a big deal, they do what they can to build a match that seems like a high end squash.
MIro has a promo for the match with House of Black, and Miro’s stuff is always crazy, weird, and scary. Darby and Sting join him for a bit, and it does a great job of hyping their match on the power of Miro’s promo.
It’s time for CM Punk to hit the ring. Punk goes over his injury and throws an insult toward a fan in the front row who was giving him crap. PUnk says he came back too early from a serious injury. He says his doctor told him he is 100% but he doesn’t know if that 100% is good enough. Punk talks about how he let people down and maybe he’s just not good enough any more.
Ace Steel comes out and says this isn’t what they talked about in the back. He gives the type of speech that Mickey gives Rocky before the final fight in the first two Rocky movies and the crowd gets into it when Ace tells him he’s gonna sign the contract and fight Jon Moxley.
The crowd cheers, Punk fires up and he takes off through the crowd with the contract. He accepts the match and he says he can’t be beaten because We Are Chicago!
FTR and Wardlow vs Silas Young, Red Jones, and someone else as none of them get their names on the screen.
Can we please go back to Wardlow just crushing people? A shame that Silas Young is the modern day version of Kenny J “The Sodbuster”. Wardlow wins with a power bomb.
Winners: FTR and Wardlow.
A squash to build to their match with Jay Lethal and the Motor City Machine Guns.
Just an idea, how about instead of this, we get a match to highlight the Machine Guns as they have never wrestled in AEW so we think they have a chance, because now we just see them as a team to come in and eat the pin.
After the commercials, Mox comes out to accept the match and warn Punk that we will be seeing violence like we’ve never seen before.
In the back, Evil Uno says he is taking 10’s spot in the trios match Friday. Andrade shows up to buy 10’s contract, and when Evil Uno says no, Andrade beats him down and leaves him laying.
Dante Martin vs Rush vs Rey Fenix vs Wheeler Yuta
I am damn glad I am not doing the play by play for this.
This match starts at full speed and just pops from move until everyone gets a tope onto the outside. Some great moves from Dante and Fenix, and now I want a match between the two of them. Rush even gets some high flying stuff, which he doesn’t pull out often.
When we get back from the commercials and small screen, and they work two men int he ring at a time. Dante looks better than he has a while, but every sequence is exciting and makes them look their best. Yuta is able to win with the seat belt submission. This was a lot fo fun and I wish they would have gone longer. Just a fun match.
Winner: Wheeler Yuta
John Silver and Alex Reynolds are with Tony and say they are willing to continue in the trios tournament by themselves, and Adam Page comes out and says he will join them for the match on Rampage.
Will Ospreay and Aussie Open vs Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks
Kenny Omega’s entire intro trolls Will Ospreay over and over and was just a blast.
Omage and Ospreay start off and the emotion they show in their fighting feels like the old “we can't keep these two people apart” that makes wrestling fun. After we get some high flying stuff it becomes a brawl on the outside all around the ring and entryway area.
When we get back from the small screen, Mark David is taking out both of the Young Bucks. Kyle Fletcher comes in and they start the double teaming, but the Bucks start their comeback. I really wish they would explain the Trios rules because sometimes you have to tag and sometimes you don’t.
Omega and Ospreay have another sequence where they put over that they both know each other so well that they can foretell each other’s moves. Omega gets back in the ring and Aussie Open double teams him to take control, and they take off Omega’s compression shirt and we see Omega’s shoulder and midsection is still taped up. He gets to the man the man in jeopardy through the small screen commercial break.
When they go full screen, we get a dose of Young Buckery. This leads to a series of near falls that are just nuts. Omega finally wins with a V Trigger and a one winged angel on Fletcher.
Winners and moving on the Trio Tournament: Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks
We get a rundown of Rampage on Friday and we’re out of time!
