Well here it is. I was going to write a long column today about how bad Tony Khan's booking has gotten but then I figured why bother. The people that understand the business already know and the people that don't care about logic and doing things the right way will never understand what I would have said anyway, as long as they get action and "surprises". I will just say this.
Tony Khan didn't HAVE to bring Punk back so soon. He chose to.
He didn't have to pull a match that would have made people want to spend money on an otherwise meh PPV in ten days, on a weekend when WWE is doing TWO loaded shows on Peacock no less, and put it on free TV. He chose to.
He didn't have to book the match the way that you will see it below either. I would argue it doesn't help either man, or the AEW Title. I would also argue that by putting it on as early as he did, he made it easy for people to turn his show off after that (which a LOT of people have told me that they did). He didn't have to take a program that had great interest and set it ablaze last night. He chose to.
The goal of a booker is create characters that people care about as well cultivate storylines that people invest in and get sucked into. He did just the opposite last night. I hope we don't look back on this day down the road as the day things started speeding downhill for AEW. But if it ends up that we do, it will be because Tony Khan chose to do it.
