ESPN has a long article looking at the events and preparation leading up the Ric Flair's probable 'last match' this Sunday with comments from Flair, Jay Lethal, Charlotte, Conrad Thompson and more.
On what his motivation was for wanting to have a last match, Flair mentioned "Ego and glory. And family."
Lethal commented about trying to get him to 'take it easy' during his last match:
"He just has to go out there and do what's called 'the greatest hits' -- strut, 'Woooo!,' chop someone. And the people would be OK with that. But that wouldn't be OK with him. So, you're gonna see him attempt and deliver on a Level 10 match. Whatever he can bring, he will bring."
Flair noted he has talked to about 15 doctors about the match and most of them replied with "Oh, Jesus. Do you have to?". But his favorite doctor has cleared him, which Flair said is all he needs.
About whether he has concerns regarding his health, Flair responded:
"No. But I've been dead. Fourteen days. Life support."
Flair added his pacemaker doesn't have a defibrillator, so that won't affect him with a jolt during the match. But it could become unplugged on a bump in the ring, but it wouldn't be difficult to fix afterwards and it wouldn't kill him.
Thompson mentioned he pitched the last match idea to Flair back in April.
"I barely got the sentence out of my mouth before Ric goes, 'Let's do it', and I kind of expected that."
Flair noted he was not serious about having a last match until he got the call from Thompson and seeing Steve Austin and Vince McMahon compete at WrestleMania helped get the itch again. "I still didn't think about wrestling, but I really enjoyed watching that. Steve came out and did a lot more than I thought he would do. Austin competes. That's what makes him who he is. And Vince? What can I say about Vince? He's the most competitive guy in the world."
Lethal commented on their private workouts.
"Sometimes he'd want a private [workout] in the morning and he'd wake up before me. I'd look at my phone and I've got a voicemail. 'Wake up, m-----f---er. I want to get in the ring. Suplex me off the top.' I'm like, 'What?!' And that's the end of the message. One of the first things he wanted to do was a suplex off the top or a clothesline over the top to the outside. I'm terrified. I'm like, 'Why do you need to do that?'"
Charlotte mentioned she was able to talk him out of wanting to do a dive to the outside of the ring during his last match. "A lot of our men and women in all companies miss those all the time. I was like, 'No, not needed, not necessary. Wasn't necessary in your prime, isn't necessary now. So, no.'"
Charlotte noted she will be in attendance for his last match, but is not worried about Flair especially since Andrade will be with him.
