There is one sport that continues to rise up and compete with the most exciting sports on the planet, and that is MMA, the leader in this industry, is the UFC. It all began in 1993 when the UFC started in a small venue in North America. It began with the idea to find out which martial arts is the most effective.
At the time, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu family called the Grace family came up with the concept to find out which art is the best. They decided to put two competitors in a steel cage to find out. The only rules at the time were no biting and no hitting between the legs. It caused controversy with people who said it should be banned. In fact, many states in the US banned it.
It managed to last, and it finally got into the hands of Dana White and his good friend Lorenzo Fertitta. They bought the company and changed the game once and for all. The minds of two college friends turned the UFC into a thrilling event. Now you can bet on UFC matches at one of the New Zealand online casino sites or watch it live on a Saturday night.
Before, two guys would fight until someone could not continue. Now there were time limits and rounds which made the whole event more exciting.
Once the rules were implemented, the fighters became more well-rounded in mixed martial arts. It turned gyms that concentrated on one martial art into MMA gyms. Mixed Martial Arts were born. Rather than just concentrating on one art, MMA forced you to learn multiple arts to become the greatest fighter on earth.
There were judo experts who had to try and learn boxing skills. Thai boxers who had to learn how to wrestle. It created a fantastic battle in which fighters could become the complete fighter of them all. They decided to add different weight categories to the UFC. This was brilliant and allowed so many more fighters to get involved with it.
What Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta managed to do back in 2001 was incredible. They turned a sport that was thought to be brutal and like cock fighting to an audience of millions. The sport now operates in 50 US states and is watched by a demographic between 18 to 40 years old. It has appeared on Spike TV in the US on Fox Broadcasting.
As of 2022, the UFC is shown regularly on ESPN and has pay-per-view shows every month. It has smashed several records, like when they put on an event in Madison Square Garden in 2016. The live gate receipts were a staggering 17 million. They have toured the world and brought the UFC event and brand to many countries, including the UK, Brazil, Canada, Australia, and several places in Europe.
Expect the UFC to get better and stronger in years to come. There have been some big stars who have made their name under the UFC banner. The likes of Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Ronda Rousey, Anderson Silva, and of course, the biggest of them all, Conor McGregor who has become the world’s top-paid athlete in 2021.
These stars have been made through the UFC and have starred in films and even WWE entertainment. So as you can see, the UFC brand has come from nothing to be a leader in sports. There are now more young kids joining gyms to become UFC stars than boxing.
