During the annual Not-So-Strange Bedfellows: The Relationship Between Comics & Professional Wrestling panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Masked Republic President & COO Kevin Kleinrock announced the company's new brand Cinelucha.
The official description of the brand included on the preview art given to panel attendees reads:
Inspired by classic lucha libre films, Cinelucha® goes beyond simply watching a movie or reading a comic book. Cinelucha gives fans an opportunity to step into a world of masked heroes and classic villains! The unified transmedia property will include not only publishing and film/tv but tabletop, video, and RPG games, immersive location-based entertainment, collectibles and more! The Cinelucha story world is like nothing you’ve ever experienced and it all starts here at SDCC 2022.
We are told there will be a limited supply of the preview art made available during the Super Astro Jr. and Psychosis signings at the Headlocked booth at SDCC later this weekend including Super Astro today until 6:30 PM local time and Psicosis' signing tomorrow, which starts at 1 PM local time.
The new brand is described as based around storytelling that would be considered"modern application of the classic lucha libre film genre", so think the classic movies with El Santo, Blue Demon, etc. fighting monsters and Satan, etc.
There will be a comic book series featuring stories and art curated by Hector Rodriguez III of Masked Republic and "Professor Latin X" Frederick Luis Aldama of the Latinx Pop Lab at the University of Texas, Austin. The comic stories are being created with the idea of targeting them for future development as film and TV properties.
The Cinelucha brand will be the first official roleplaying and tabletop Masked Republic games. They announced Blacklist Games (Contra, Street Fighter, etc.) was announced for release later in the year. They showed a sneak peak of some of the product.
Also announced was a series of Collectibles via Boss Fight Studios, who do the Masked Republic Legends of Lucha Libre line and were recently announced as doing an MLW action figures line. The CineLucha line would be separate and different from the Legends of Lucha line.
NERDS clothing are the first apparel partner for Cinelucha. They stated more would be announced.
The SDCC brand reveal logo tee is available now for a limited time only via Pro Wrestling Tees at this link.
