OFF AIR NOTES FROM AEW'S LOS ANGELES DEBUT

Running notes on AEW Dynamite taping.

Dark Elevation taping:

Got here late for dark taping and missed women’s tag, looked like Nyla Rose and someone else won. Squash.

Death Triangle vs Ryan Nemeth, Cezar Bononi, Peter Avalon
Crowd is suuuuper hot for Death Triangle and penta’s pre match routine. Pac is sooo crisp. Death triangle wins by package pile driver double stomp combo while Pac had nemeth in The brutalizer.

AEW did a promo video where the roster members said “All are Welcome Here” n recognition of Pride month.

Announce desk is set up on the entry ramp. Big pops for introduction of each announcer.

Justin Roberts does a really good job warming up the crowd, introducing the ring crew, timekeeper, and security.

Building is at least 90% full based on the arena configuration. About 15,000 people I’d say.

Tony Khan comes out to hype the crowd before we go live.

Trios Match

Massive pop for Punk and FTR both.

Acclaimed are way over and Max Caster is really underrated in his ability to work the crowd before and during a match,

After Punk and FTR spoke, Crowd was legit shocked to see Tanahashi.

Side note: Punk was noticeably limping on the way to the back even off camera

Holy hell MJF draws so much heat.  He came out to a huge chorus of boos and Turned them all to the point he got a standing ovation for the back half of his promo and a long MJF chant during the commercial break.

Not sure if it made it into tv, at the end of the promo CM Punk came out to talk to MJF, but MJF bailed through the crowd and out the door. 

Match 2

Huge surprise to see Miro’s promo, no one thought he was actually going to be here live. The crowd loves Miro and he looks ripped.

Miro seemed genuinely touched by the crowd’s reaction

JAS PROMO

During Jericho’s promo, Eddie Kingston got the loudest pop of the night to this point.

They played Judas during the commercial after the JAS promo so the crowd still got to sing, but wait, no.  They have literally edited Judas to remove the chorus so no more sing along with Jericho.

Match 3 - Ten Man Tag

Crowd loves all the standard spots from Young Bucks Darby and Jurassic Express. Spotfest but entertaining for the crowd who came to see the hometown Bucks.

Seeing Darby hit his rope suicida live is insane, it literally looks like a car crash.

Matt Hardy looks totally rejuvenated during this current run.

Crowd has been very pro heel tonight. They love the faces but REALLY love the heels.

Athena Interview.

Not sure how it came off on tv, but this segment fell flat. Big pop for Athena coming out, but it died off as soon as she started talking.

Stokely Hathaway is great in the mic and did his best to save the segment. Jade Cargill has a great look and is improving in the ring, but she still only seems to be able to say “ I’m that bitch”

Match 4 - Wardlow vs Jd Drake

Squash match, less than 90 seconds but crowd was into the wardlow chant. 

Seeing him powerbomb 310lb JD Drake twice was wild live.

After the Wardlow- Smart Mark Sterling segment, the security guard who served Wardlow with the documents got powerbombed twice

Ruby Soho & Toni Storm vs Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter.

Crowd largely quiet for the first half of the match, with  a short dueling chant Ruby Soho-DMD. Crowd really picked up after Toni got the hot tag.  Britt is way over in LA but crowd was happy to see Ruby start to build a little momentum.

Main Event

William Regal out for commentary.  Jericho comes  out and the crowd FINALLY gets to sing along to Judas during the commercial.

Looks like Moxley may hav gotten busted open hardway from Daniel Garcia head butting him twice.

Crowd really got on Garcia for wiping Moxley’s blood on his own face.

Crowd was really into Daniel Garcia and seeing him live he is really much more impressive than watching him on tv.

Morley got on the mic post match and thanked LA and said it was a long time coming for AEW to get out to the west coast. 

Overall very hot crowd and they seemed to like everything out in front of them.
