Young Rock S2 E10 - “Rocky’s Code”
The Johnson Family Ranch...2 Days Before the Election
The Rock’s campaign team goes over the numbers and his upcoming schedule. He surprises them by saying he’s going to lunch with an old friend. He brings Randall.
Memphis 1985
We see Rocky Johnson feeling the effects of his career and the toll it’s taken on his body. Rocky is becoming dependent on Ibuprofen and gin. Dewey is shoplifting over the counter painkillers.
In the locker room, Jerry Lawler gives Rocky some leads on some shows he can work. Lawler also announces Crusher is being called up to the WWF and he is now Bam Bam Bigelow. Lawler tells Johnson he’s in the main event against Bam Bam in a winner gets a WWF contract match. Randy Savage is on commentary with Lawler. Rocky grabs the contract and he signs with a red ink and Lawler and Savage explain it’s only valid if the ink is blue or black. We see Downtown Bruno stole the proper pen. Bam Bam hits Rocky with a chair and then pins him with a flying splash. Bam Bam is going to WWF and Rocky is stuck in Memphis.
At dinner, Ata and Rocky are with Savage and Elizabeth. Rocky is clearly jealous and upset about the lifestyle a WWF superstar gets to live. As they leave Dewey pulls Macho Man aside and asks him if he could talk to Vince about bringing Rocky back. Savage tells him that ship has sailed.
Backstage at the next show, Dewey and Bruno are watching Rocky’s match against Jeff Jarrett. Dewey says he doesn’t want his Dad to end up crippled and broke.
Back on the bus, The Rock says that’s when he decided to go all in on football so he could possibly make a lot of money and take care of his parents.
Macho Man is at the grand opening of a Sears in Memphis. He talks bout how Sears changed his life and he cuts the ribbon and tells everyone to take advantage of the Savage savings. Inside, he starts helping out the customers and REALLY loves helping.
Back at the show, Rocky meets a new promoter Don Jarvis. He asks Rocky to headline the Coliseum and offers him $200. Dewey, Bruno and Honky Tonk Man look on.
Elizabeth and Ata have lunch and they try to not talk about wrestling. They’re having fun drinking wine together. Ata says she doesn’t get to go this often.
Rocky and Dewey drive through a very small town a “duck while driving town” due to them being black. Rocky arrives at the show and Jarvis pays Rocky his $100 upfront and explains he wants to shoot some promos of him eating watermelon and friend chicken. Rocky tells Jarvis he doesn’t work that way and says he’s leaving. Jarvis says everybody else will, Rocky says he’s different.
The Rock says to Randall it wasn’t the first time his Dad was asked to do a racist gimmick but he didn’t do them. He had a code he lived by and didn’t break it.
Rocky and Dewey drive home. Dewey asks why his Dad is so calm and how did he not beat his ass. Rocky tells Dewey in this business you’ll be asked to things you don’t want to do but you have to say no sometimes and live with it.
Macho Man has been hanging out at Sears all day and the manager says he can’t pay him for staying there. Savage says it was his pleasure. The manager offers Macho Man a can of Slim Jims which Savage hasn’t seen before. And the legend begins....
The Rock leaves Randall at the airport and flies off for his lunch. He tells his friend all about polling problems after the issues started with Julian. We see his friend is Forest Whitaker who says he’s going to help with the Julian problem.
