WWE will present their 2022 Wrestlemania Backlash PPV this Sunday. Here is our take on what will happen.
Undisputed WWE & Universal Champion Roman Reigns & WWE Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos vs. Drew McIntyre & WWE Raw Tag Team Champions RK-Bro
Dave: The Bloodline are one of the few good things that the company has going right now. RK-Bro is one of the other few good things. I hope WWE resisted the urge to do a “makes no sense” turn with the Raw tag champs. But, it’s WWE so….In any event, I see the Bloodline going over here.
Mike: The match will be fun, but it's meaningless. There's nothing at stake. It's just a random six man. The obvious finish is Drew pinning Roman to set up a future PPV bout, but I'd throw a curveball in and have Orton get the pin with the RKO.
Richard: Roman's big edict was that the Tag Titles would be unified so the Usos could have two titles. I guess Vince hasn't acknowledged Roman. If they are going to go Drew vs Roman, Drew pinning Roman would make sense, but we are talking WWE. Maybe Drew pins an Uso and Roman gets pissed at Jimmy or Jey and then goes on to challenge Drew for the title (and maybe they hold off on Drew winning until September in Wales)
I Quit Match: WWE Smackdown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair vs. Ronda Rousey
Dave: If the Title wasn’t on the line, I could see them having Charlotte pass out, lose that way and then say she never said that she quit. Since the Title is on the line, I will go with Ronda puts Charlotte to sleep, thinks that she won and Charlotte them awakens and takes her out from behind.
Mike: I expect a title change here. Flair chasing Ronda for the rubber match works for me and I don't see them having Rousey, MMA queen, submit.
Richard: I quit on this feud long before this match was made official. What was the purpose of a Beat the Clock Challenge when no advantage was given? I hope that Charlotte cuts a promo during the match and that is how Ronda says those two little words. If they want to give the title to Ronda, the best way to do it is to have the referee get knocked out and then out comes REFEREE TRAINEE Drew Gulak to be the one to hold the mic when Charlotte quits.
Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins
Dave: If they really want to push Cody and see what they have in him, he needs to win here. If he loses, he becomes just like almost everyone else in WWE, nothing special.
Mike: I agree with Dave here. The 50/50 split booking is not the way to go here. Either do a draw or have Cody go over again to really send Seth over the deep end.
Richard: Cody needs to win this match. If he is going to be a man to challenge Roman, he needs to stay strong (maybe this happens at SummerSlam or Money in the Bank). To add insult to injury (of us having to endure Seth Rollins promo segments), why not have Cody win with a Pedigree.
AJ Styles vs. Edge, with Damian Priest banned from ringside.
Dave: So Edge is kind of the Gangrel figure now and Priest is Edge. We need a Christian. Since Priest is banned from ringside, whoever Edge picked to play the new Christian appears and costs AJ the match. Just to make this super WWE goofy, let’s have the new Christian be Elias so then we have two silly storylines intersecting. Plus, Elias/Ezekial gets to do double the work for the same pay, the WWE Way!
Mike: My guess is a new disciple interferes (maybe Rhea Ripley?) to set up Edge getting the win over Styles as we keep building the House of Black, er, Edge.
Richard: Maybe they can borrow the low lighting from the World of Darkness match from NXT UK for this match so the Cul de Sac of Violet can get an advantage since Priest is banned from ringside. Do they fight towards the back so Priest can get involved, or do they add a new face to the group? Ciampa has been beating up Mustafa Ali for no reason so maybe he is trying to get the Edge of My Interest scouts to show an interest. Or was the Finn Balor "Too Sweet" moment a red herring to get us to think that Balor and AJ would start a WWE version of the Bullet Club (Ammunition Association?), only to have Balor turn on AJ and join Edge? It makes no sense, so that is where i think they are going (I accept no blame if this really happens)
Mapcap Moss vs. Happy Corbin.
Dave: We have a Madcap vs. a Happy, two of the dumbest names ever given to wrestlers. If this isn’t a fitting representative of the bad creative process, I don’t know what is.
Mike: The right thing to do is have Happy lose in a Madcap way.
Richard: Moss wins, moves on from Corbin, shows that he is good in the ring and then we never have to speak about this feud again.
Bobby Lashley vs Omos, with MVP
Dave: There is no world that Omos should beat Lashley but now that he has MVP with him I could see chicanery lead to the big guy stealing a win so that this mess can continue.
Mike: I disagree. Lashley won at Wrestlemania. If this is going to be a program, Omos has to keep the heat and should lose.
Richard: Omos wins. He is taller so that is my justification (probably better than what WWE is trying to push as a reason for this feud).
