Self-destructive students manipulate themselves through small, inconspicuous acts and thus maneuver their student life step by step towards the abyss. They hurt themselves - and have fun doing it. To a large extent, they do without self-reflection and do not accept any criticism from outside either. Together, this results in a deadly mixture that has already killed many a university career.
Today we are testing whether you are one of the self-destructive students. I have collected indicators that you can use to evaluate your ruinous urge. Which of the following statements apply to you?
If you want to progress in your studies and be happy, you need clear goals. Without goals, you stagger disoriented from semester to semester and miss out on great opportunities. Not setting goals and starting your own studies without a plan are the biggest mistakes you can make. Do not you think? Then read this and this article from me.
Many students see sleep as an annoying alternative. They go to bed too late, sleep restlessly and, if necessary, forego this type of relaxation when things get stressful. But it is precisely by doing this that they destroy the basis of their future success. You can only access your full potential if you have had enough sleep. On the other hand, if you are constantly tired, you will be less able to remember, learn more slowly, and have constant headaches, a bad mood, and difficulty concentrating.
What is the capital of a craft? His hands – that was easy. What is a student's capital? A little tip: It's not his computer, nor the script collection, nor the Netflix subscription. A student's capital is his head. Or more precisely: His mental state. If you study, you belong to the so-called brain workers. Thinking is your job. And that thinking only works best when you take care of yourself. That means: drinking enough water, eating the right things, getting enough sleep (see above), doing some sport, and maintaining social contacts. Or in general: Lead a healthy life – physically and mentally.
Discipline is annoying and boring. But this behavior is the basis for extraordinary success. You will only be successful if you consistently stick to one thing and keep working. Do you know a well-known scientist or explorer who became famous for only doing research every now and then? Do you think Christiano Ronaldo became a world footballer because he only trained when he felt like it? Discipline is the key to great success – both professionally and privately. Discipline requires willpower and perseverance. But it is precisely these skills that will take you further in your studies.
I know countless students who are incredibly talented. Many of them are also smarter and harder working than I will ever be. Nevertheless, they have been studying for 15 semesters and are annoyed about their three-person average. I'm not saying that length of study and grades are the best measure of success - I disagree ( here and here to read). However, these students are missing something. In my discussions as a subject advisor, I often find that these students don't believe in themselves. They don't trust themselves. They think they are bad and block themselves. This inner attitude is dangerous because it ensures that the best students never reach their full potential. That's sad - but fortunately avoidable.
Continuing with too little self-confidence is overly harsh self-criticism. In my experience, hard-working, introverted students tend to behave this way. Their own achievements are never good enough for them. They doubt their every action and condemn themselves for every little mistake. They think badly of themselves - and in doing so continuously undermine their self-worth. Don't get me wrong, it's totally okay to be self-critical and question yourself. But don't overdo it. Don't think badly of yourself, but see yourself as a person in a development process. Mistakes are normal and part of it.
A preliminary stage of self-destructive behavior can be the projection of destructive thoughts onto other people. That means if you treat other people badly or speak badly about them, you may be next. So be careful how you treat those around you. Be nice to them and treat them with respect. Don't gossip or spread rumors.
Is there anything more to say? Avoid making these mistakes and stay the top-notch student you want to be! Lastly, don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can take on the world all by yourself, if you need help, just say “write my essay online” and be done with it!
