Young Rock S2 E7 - An Understanding

Dwayne Johnson Campaign Rally - Memphis, TN 2032

The Rock walks off stage and is greeted by Randall. “Tough crowd” he says but he tells Randall he got them back. As a Tony winning actor he knows how to win over a crowd. The Rock starts telling a story about how at 15 living in Nashville he thought he would be the next big country-western season but “it didn’t got well."

Nashville 1987

Dewey and Bruno are walking around downtown seeing all the street musicians. Bruno tells him if Dewey thinks he can be a singer he should check out the competition. Dewey finds a spot, takes off his hat and sets it on the ground. Bruno puts a dollar in it and leaves. Dewey starts singing “Islands in the Stream” and heads turn and the other musicians confront him. 

Rock & Randall on the campaign bus and The Rock starts setting the scene about how life was in Nashville. That his Mom was still mad at Rocky and he said living with Bruno but they got to hang out at the gym. 

Rocky is giving lifting instructions to Bam Bam Bigelow and Dewey. They talk about how well the territory is doing and Bam Bam leaves. Rocky asks Dewey how Ata is doing and he tries to give Dewey money to give to his mom. 

At the apartment, Ata is cooking dinner.  She isn’t pleased to see Rocky, she takes the money he offers her and she lets him know he can go. Rocky gets the hint and leaves. Rocky gets back to the motel room and Bruno is once again sitting on the toilet while cooking eggs. Rocky as for four.

The Rock tells Randall that he’d seen his parents not get along before but that Nashville was rough.

Bruno is in charge or driving them around because Rocky doesn’t want to be pulled over for driving while black. Him and Dewey duck down so the residents can’t see them in the car with Bruno. Bruno tells them Pat Patterson is coming to the matches because he's now scouting for Vince. Bruno asks Rocky to make Bam Bam look great tonight.  Rocky says he always sells. 

At the matches, Dewey worked ring crew with Brian Lawler who was one of his best friends. Despite their size difference they were the same age. Brian & Dewey pitch different tag team gimmicks. Bam Bam asks Pat what he thought about his match. He says it was good but his gimmick is bad. Rocky & Pat discuss his new career. Dewey overhears Rocky asking Pat to help get him back in WWF but Pat shoots it down saying it won’t happen, he broke his contract so Vince won’t bring him back.

This surprises Dewey because he’s only heard his Dad’s side of the story. He goes to the locker room and asks Bam Bam what happened in Saudi Arabia. Bam Bam explains Rocky took a booking for another promotion when Vince didn’t want him to. Because of it Rocky didn’t get to work the first two WrestleManias and he missed out on a huge opportunity. 

Lia is talking on the phone with Ata about Days of Our Lives when Dewey comes home. She gets off the phone and Dewey asks about the stuff with Vince and Ata confirms it, he’s upset about how often Rocky’s selfishness hurts the family and storms off.

Ata finds him at the bar. Dewey continues to tell her how upset he is with Rocky living the gimmick and working them. Ata tells Dewey shouldn’t have to deal with this being a kid. He asks why do they bother following him around. Ata explains Rocky had a hard life and how he was on his own by age 13 hitch hiking around Canada.

The Rock tells Randall that his Dad bounced around from odd jobs until he found wrestling and  in the late 60’s he landed in San Francisco where he met Peter Maivia. The High Chief invites Rocky to stay with him and they become tag partners and this is how he met Ata. 

After the matches Rocky introduces himself to Ata and he asks her to go to dinner with him but he says she doesn’t date wrestlers. Lia comes over and tells him to leave and talk to “the rats” instead. Dewey asks why Grandma didn’t want her to date a wrestler and Ata says because she wanted her to have a stable life. She them confesses she wants Dewey yo become a wrestler despite how tough the life is. She explains they date in secret while Lia tries to set her up on dates. Everything was fine until Haystacks Calhoun (who was a sweet man but couldn’t keep a secret) catches Rocky & Ata making out at the venue. 

Calhoun is overheard by Peter gossiping about Rocky & Ata while at a party. Ata gets scolded afterwards by Lia while Peter is telling Rocky this has to end or the tag team is over and he is done in the territory. Rocky chooses Ata. She says her parents were mad at them until Dwayne was born. 

We see Lia holding Dwayne and Ata says his diaper is full, Lia says it’s just a little dewey. 

Randall laughs and the revelation that The Rock’s nickname is based on what his grandmother called poop. 

Ata tells Dewey despite everything she loves Rocky and he needs them more than they need him.  The Rock says that you learn that your parents are just people trying to do what’s best. He says he started spending more time with his Dad after that. 

We see Rocky, Dewey & Bam Bam leaving the gym. Bam Bam is reluctant to give up the Crusher gimmick but Rocky encourages him to listen to Vince & Pat because they know what they’re doing. 

He takes Dewey home and Ata serves dinner. This time Rocky is asked to stay. 

On the jet, Dwayne is told that his rally has made news. We see footage of the event and candidate Johnson decides to confront the Dr. Julien issue by cutting a wrestling promo on him. The Rock says Julien messed with the Brahma Bull and he’s going to get the horns and he’s going to lay the Smackdown on his sorry ass. That’s right… the jabroni beating, pie eating, trail blazing, hell raising, people’s champ is coming for you. He stares into the camera and raises the people eyebrow.

Young Rock airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC or On Demand.
