MAJOR CHANGE FOR AEW'S CABLE TV HOMES

By Mike Johnson on 2022-04-26 16:55:00

Variety is reporting that TBS and TNT, now under the Discovery umbrella after that company's takeover of WarnerMedia, will no longer develop original scripted programming.  Discovery is seeking to cut $3 Billion in costs post-merger.   There is no word yet what this means for the networks' current series, such as The Last O.G. or Snowpiercer.

Deadline.com also reported that a planned TBS comedy starring Damon Wayans Jr. Kill The Orange-Faced Bear was canceled just a week before going into production in Vancouver, British Columbia.

AEW was not mentioned in either article and may not fall under the scripted programing category.  None of the programming that would fall under that category bring in the overnight ratings that AEW's programming does for the networks, so it may be that TBS and TNT ramping down their original development of scripted content could place AEW in a much more important position for the networks.

AEW's current deal, which was signed in 2020, well before the Discovery takeover, runs through 2023.
