Young Rock S2 E5 • What Business?
The show opens on board the Johnson campaign’s plane. The Rock is watching highlights of his opponent’s (Sen. Taft) rally where Dr. Julien Echo makes an appearance. He says “when one victim is heard all victims are heard." Rock gets annoyed and shuts it off. Sandy says “we should have taken him out." Casey says they should stay the course. His poll numbers are sinking and the election is a week away.
The Rock segues into talking about having to move back into his parents house and having his “seven bucks moment." Dwayne starts working at a gym as a personal trainer trying to decide if he should wrestle.
Dwayne goes to a sports bar to watch some football and he bumps into a former college teammate named Carlos. Carlos has starting working for State Farm, Dwayne says he’s waiting to be called back to the CFL. He comes home to Lia asleep in front of the TV and a commercial for the Royal Rumble is on. He feels the universe is trying to tell him something. The next morning Ata tells Dwayne there is football in Europe. His Calgary Stampeders coach calls and offers him a spot. He turns it down shocking Rocky & Ata. They’re upset. Dwayne tells them he wants to get into the business. Ata and Lia are elated. Dwayne asks Rocky to train him and he says “No."
Everyone is upset with Rocky. Rocky makes it clear he doesn’t think Dwayne has anything to offer the wrestling business. Dwayne tells him he can train him or he’ll find someone else that will. Rocky says this will be the hardest thing you’ll ever do, football is easy. Ata & Rocky go to their room and she asks what is wrong with him. He asks Ata is it’s Dwayne’s dream or hers? She says of course it is.
“What is yours for him? Selling electronics out of your car?”
Rocky is worried Dwayne will end up just like him. Wrestling for 30 years with nothing to show for it. She says it’s in his blood and he’ll be a great champion.
Dwayne gets to the gym to practice in a boxing ring. He explains to Randall how much harder a boxing ring is and that they wouldn’t do any big moves. Rocky explains the mechanics of a flat back bump. Dwayne does one and kips up. Rocky doesn’t like this and we get a montage of Dwayne taking bump after bump trying to get Dwayne to quit.
The Rock tells Randall the Hulk Hogan/Hiro Matsuda story.
Dwayne and Rocky trade chops and he learns how to throw worked punches. Ata shows up and gives him tips as well.
At The Johnsons, Lia, Haku, Iron Sheik, Afa and Sika are there with a young boy. They are all excited to see Rodney aka Yokozuna. The boy is running around trying to get DWayne’s attention by fake choking him. He tells Dwayne to “Acknowledge me” and we learn the boy is named Joe (Roman Reigns) he’s Dwayne’s cousin. Joe wants to wrestle Dewey. He says we can’t, “we have to save it because a match that big has to happen at WrestleMania."
Rocky doesn’t like the Rumble. He says these “new kids don’t know how to wrestle” and says he misses the old school. Dwayne says he thinks adding the flash to the old school style could be a good combination. Rocky strongly disagrees.
At the gym, Dwayne is bumping and selling and getting angry about it. He tells Rocky he wants to get in a real ring and work out with some guys so he knows if he’s any good and ready to learn the moves.
Rocky says, “I’ll tell you when you’re ready."
On the plane. Randall asks how could you not know you were going to be good? The Rock says he had low self confidence but he wanted to know what his progress was like he made a call behind Rocky’s back to Pat Patterson. Dwayne tells Pat he’s getting into the business. Pat asks “why the f*** would you do that?”
Pat asks if he’s any good. Dwayne says that’s why he’s calling, he wants Pat to evaluate him.
At the gym, Rocky tells Dwayne he’s going to sell the sleeper as Pat Patterson enters the gym. Pat tells Rocky he’s there to see The Kid. Rocky is annoyed but he says he’ll show Pat what he’s got. Rocky and Dwayne show Pat a lot of selling and bumping. Dwayne realizes what he’s been taught is what Pat wanted to see. The psychology and not the big moves. Pat asks them to switch so Dwayne is the heel. Pat has seen enough. He asks Pat what he thinks. Pat says “keep working kid” and leaves.
The Rock tells Randall that’s all he needed. He tells everyone on the plane they’re going to start the course.
The episode ends with Pat calling up Dwayne and he asks if he’s ever been to Corpus Cristi.
