They say the greatest films of all time were never made…
Is the same true about the best UFC matches? Well, we hope not! But there are quite a few UFC matches that we wish we could have seen play out.
Today, we are looking at 5 UFC fights that were scheduled to happen but never actually took place.
There is a chance a few of these matches could still happen in the future - you can find the best MMA betting odds on all future matches here.
This match was scheduled for November 3rd, 2018 but it never happened.
Diaz had been forced to take some time away from the UFC because he had been caught taking CBD. He was banned for a few months and chose to take some extra time off. When we heard that Diaz would be returning that November after a two year break we were on the edge of our seats.
We couldn't think of a better opponent for Diaz to come back to - Poirier was in great form and fought in a similar way to Diaz. Sadly, the match was canceled because Poirier was injured.
Diaz eventually returned to the UFC in August 2019.
Many WWE stars have tried to branch out into competitive sports with disappointing results. Brock Lesnar was a breath of fresh air, however. He dominated the world of MMA, across multiple fighting companies.
Both dos Santos and Lesnar had been involved in coaching for the 11th Round of Ultimate Fighter, and so many of us were excited to see them get into the ring again.
This fight was meant to take place on June 11th, 2011.
Sadly, at this point in his fighting career, Lenser was having problems with diverticulitis and was unable to fight. Shane Carwin replaced him in the lineup and dos Santos completely dominated him.
However, with the Pay Per View power that Lesner had when he was part of the UCF, it would have been a great fight and a great opportunity for dos Santos to build his profile.
Speaking of Pay Per View power, we can't help but lament over every missed Conor McGregor fight. However, his match that didn't happen with Rafael dos Anjos might be the most painful.
We should note that both of these players are still active, so there is a chance that this fight could still happen if the stars align.
This fight was meant to take place on March 5th, 2016. However, Anjos broke a bone in his foot and couldn't take part.
McGregor ended up fighting Nate Diaz…
He lost his first ever fight in the UFC and lost his title in the process. Many McGregor fans still believe that dos Anjos had been able to fight that evening - things might have turned out very differently.
2018 was not a great year for Kiwi fighter Robert Whittaker - he was forced to pull out of multiple fights in a row. This really isn't something that happens very often in the UFC.
One of the fights that we wished happened the most in 2018 was the Whittaker vs Gastelum battle that was meant to take place on February 9th, 2018.
The whole fighting event was canceled because Whittaker had to cancel at the last minute and there was no time to find a replacement. The UFC usually likes to give the replacements a few weeks' warning to make the fights fairer.
Whittaker was forced to undergo emergency surgery instead of fighting that day because he developed a hernia. When he returned he lost his first fight to Israel Adesanya. Who he lost again to this year, after a run of 5 wins in a row.
Yes, we know that this fight did eventually happen, but we can't help but wonder how things would have played out had they fought on the original date.
For a long time, Edgar and Sung Jung (the Korean Zombie) were some of the biggest names in the Lightweight Division. They had both fought and beaten many of the big names in the division. So, it was only a matter of time before the UFC booked them to face each other.
This was the match that anyone following the Lightweight Division was looking forward to in 2018.
It was meant to take place on November 18th, 2018.
Edgar tore a bicep and Sung Jung ended up fighting Yair Rodriguez. This was an incredible match with Rodriguez knocking out Sung Jung in the final second.
When the Edgar vs Sung Jung fight did eventually happen on December 21st, 2019 - Sung Jung knocked out Edgar in 3:18 minutes.
The pair now fight in different weight divisions, so, we do not expect to see a rematch between these two any time soon.
