YOUNG ROCK 'IN THE DARK' RECAP

By Eric Denton on 2022-04-06 12:52:00

Young Rock S2 E4 - In the Dark

The Rock, Randall and his campaign staff are watching the news that is recapping the Twitter war that he and Julian got into the previous night. Dwayne apologizes for letting Julian get under his skin. The Rock says a bunch of  inappropriate stuff about Julian and Randall says “delete the footage” but his camera woman says they don’t own it. He asks when did she become a corporate stooge.

The Rock tells about the move from Hawaii and how Rocky had promised Ata that he would have a new apartment waiting for her when she arrived. He did not. They were still living with Downtown Bruno in the motel.

Nashville 1987 - Rocky Johnson vs Jeff Jarrett.

Bruno is managing and we see Jerry “The King” Lawler on commentary. Rocky pins Jarrett. 15 year Dewey is on the ring crew. Rocky gives Dewey some cash and explains trickle down economics which Dewey rightfully says “doesn’t seem right”. Rocky leaves for a match in Tupelo, Dewey calls Ata lying about their new apartment. Ata asks him about school but Rocky never enrolled him. Bruno makes them scrambled eggs on a stove which is situated in the restroom, he cooks them while sitting on the toilet and serves them on Road & Track magazine.

Randall asks The Rock if it bothered him not telling Ata what was going on. He said it did but he trusted Rocky would take care of everything.

Dewey and Bruno are in a bar, Bruno asks him what his dream is. Dewey says “not to be poor”. A fan walks up and tells. Bruno to “suck it”.  Bruno calls Dewey his bodyguard and he scares the fan away.

Dewey is 15 and basically on his own hanging out with Bruno being his designated driver.  We see him shoplifting a cowboy hat.  Dewey gets hit on by an older woman at the grocery store who asks him out for a drink. He tells her he’s only 15 and she says “Not again! Why are all the beautiful men 15” and leaves?

Back to Memphis Wrestling. Lawler is interviewing Bruno and they introduce Crusher Yurkov (the future Bam Bam Bigelow) as Rocky’s next opponent. They insult each other and brawl. After the show they meet Bigelow outside. Dewey asks if his head tattoo hurt. Bam Bam responds, “terribly.”  He goes on to say what a fan that he was and calls himself a “Soul Patrol” nerd. He was bummed that Rocky wasn’t in WrestleMania 2. He always liked him better than Atlas because he could tell he did all the work. Bam Bam says he’s in Memphis to work on some things so he can get to WWF. Bruno walks up and says a fan slashed his tires. Ata arrives from Hawaii surprising Rocky and Dewey.

Ata is excited to see everybody and can’t wait to see their apartment. Rocky is driving Ata to the new place. Bam Bam, Bruno and Dewey follow. Dewey is concerned about what’s going to happen. Bruno assures him Rocky is a good man. We see Rocky & Ata’s car start to swerve. They pull over and argue. She asks why he hasn’t gotten a place. Rocky says they’ve been bouncing around. Bruno fills in more info she didn’t need to know. To top it off she learns Dewey isn’t in school. Rocky keeps blaming others for not being responsible.

The Rock tells Randall, “That was a very tough time for my family, especially my Mom”. He says it was hard realizing his father wasn’t the person he believed him to be. Ata enrolled him in school and found them a place to live. They drop off boxes and Ata informs Rocky he’s not going to be staying with them. He can “bounce around” with Bruno some more.

Ata drops Dewey off at the wrestling show. He watches Crusher vs Rocky. Lawler is on commentary. They roll out of the ring to talk to Dewey. Lawler walks over and asks them what is going on. He also informs them “The Clap” is going around and to “protect their junk."

Rocky is driving Dewey home and asks him about school. Dewey isn’t interested in talking because Rocky isn’t truthful. Rocky said he had a plan but it didn’t come together in time. He drives up to a big house and said he wanted to get them a place like this. Rocky tells Dewey he’ll be back on top like he was in WWF.

The Rock says his Dad believed he could get all the things he promised for them but his choices put his mom and him in a tough spot. Things would become even more complicated in the future.

Johnson’s campaign team say they booked Dwayne on all the Sunday shows to explain himself, then they decided it was best to do opposition research on Dr. Echo and destroy him.

The Rock disagrees and notes the 24 hour news cycle will move on.

"We don’t need to platform Julian."

 His assistant Sandy looks concerned.

The Rock says “You’ve already put your plan in motion haven't you?"

Sandy nods.

The Rock sighs…
