YOUNG ROCK SEASON TWO PREMIERE RECAP

By Eric Denton on 2022-03-16 10:39:00

Young Rock - Season 2 Episode 1  - “Unprecedented Father”

 “Unprecedented with Randall Park”

Park opens the show riding a horse recapping season one.  He says he and Dwayne have become best friends but he’s been criticized for not asking tough questions.  Park finds Dwayne fishing at the pond on his property and asks him the tough question, “which breed of dog would he eliminate?”  Johnson just stares at him and his campaign advisors are not amused.  Park says if the polls hold, he will win on Election Day. Dwayne sends a voice memo to his daughter singing The Eagles' “Desperado” saying it’s a priority for him to stay in touch with them.

Hawaii 1983 - Ata, Dewey and Lia are watching Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas wrestling The Wild Samoans. Dewey fantasizes about tagging with his dad and doesn’t realize Rocky and Tony just won the WWF Tag Team Championships. The door knocks and an FBI agent is there to collect Lia Maivia, she’s under house arrest and is in trouble for being at The Johnsons.

The Johnsons go out to dinner to celebrate and meet Atlas at the restaurant.   The running gag is Lia keeps showing up places she’s not supposed to. An FBI agent comes to get her. Dewey is jealous of Tony and Rocky’s friendship and is sad to learn they’re going back on the road. Dewey day dreams about beating up Tony. A fan comes up and asks Tony for an autograph and it makes Rocky jealous.

We’re in Dwayne’s kitchen and he is making biscuits explaining to Randall about how Tony and Rocky were the first black tag champs in WWE history. Park says the dough he’s making looks great. Dwayne says the recipe is in his cookbook “Can Cook What The Rock is  Cookin”.  Dwayne explains that after Rocky stopped working for Vince they were evicted from their apartment in Hawaii and moved to Nashville.

Nashville, TN 1987 - Ata is on the phone giving Rocky instructions about the move from Hawaii to Nashville. Rocky says everything will be fine now that he’s working for Jerry Lawler. Dewey (age 15) is packed but not excited to move.

Dwayne lands in Nashville and is picked up by Bob Owens and they go to lunch. Bob talks wrestling, Dewey doesn’t care and just wants to see Rocky. Bob drives him to a motel. Dewey gets to room 117 and Downtown Bruno (aka the future Harvey Wippleman) answers the door. Rocky isn’t there. Bruno and Dwayne go to a bar for some wings and Rocky finally arrives. Bruno leaves because the heels and babyfaces can’t be seen in public together. Rocky explains they don’t have an apartment and will be living at the motel. He’s been “too busy” to get a new place and everything is under control. Rocky leaves.

Dwayne and Randall are in the garden picking radishes and Johnson explains how he ended up with the Calgary Stampeders. Dwayne moves into a small apartment and grabs a used mattress from a brothel down the road. Dwayne shows up at practice and is confronted by CFL MVP Doug Flutie for giving an interview where he said that Calgary would go 18-0 and win the Grey Cup.

Dwayne calls Dany Garcia back at her job to tell her all about what happened. Johnson explains all about her to Randall and we see her impressive resume as Johnson’s now business partner.

Dwayne explains how he had a hard time adjusting to the CFL rules. He doesn’t make the team and is invited to the practice squad and is taking a pay cut. He calls Dany and says he’s going to stay, make the team and get to the NFL.  Dany helped him grow up and stop living the gimmick.

The show ends with Sean Astin’s as of yet unnamed character posting to social media that Dwayne is a bad person and needs to be stopped from becoming President.

“Young Rock” airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC and on demand on Peacock.
