Tiger Mask and Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Chase Owens and Bad Luck Fale
Fale hit Tanahashi with a Basement dropkick and took out his left knee. Tanahashi tagged out and the young lions came to ice his knee.
Fale pins Tiger Mask after a Grenade Launcher.
Owens and Fale attacked Tiger Mask after the match, knowing that Tanahashi was hurt.
Fale proclaimed to Kevin Kelly on commentary that “the New Japan Cup belongs to us!”
The young lions carefully helped Tanahashi and Tiger Mask from the ring.
I don’t know if Tanahashi got legitimately hurt or if it is an angle. We shall see going forward. Tanahashi will face Fale tomorrow in their Round 2 match.
BUSHI and Tetsuya Naito vs. SHO and Gedo
Gedo punches BUSHI with brass knuckles. SHO locks BUSHI in a different version of the Snake Bite.
BUSHI taps out.
Gedo punches Naito in the gut after the match. Gedo faces Naito later in Round 2.
Aaron Henare, Jeff Cobb, Great O-Khan and Will Ospreay vs. Yujiro Takahashi, EVIL, Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo
Ishimori and ELP argue about who will start the match. Ospreay teases them about the friction in Bullet Club.
Wild fun match! Ishimori hits O-Khan with a low blow. EVIL hits O-Khan with Everything is Evil.
EVIL pins O-Khan.
Ospreay and ELP put on an aerial show. They will meet Saturday in Round 2. That should be awesome.
The mixing of House of Torture and Bullet Club members is interesting. They are confused whether to hit the Too Sweet Salute high or low. They will be teasing the drama within Bullet Club throughout the New Japan Cup.
SANADA, Shingo Takagi and Hiromu Takahashi vs. DOUKI, Taichi and Minoru Suzuki
Hiromu tried to open the ropes for Suzuki during his entrance. The King kicks Hiromu in the face and sends him into guardrails. Suzuki-Gun attacks LIJ. Another wild match.
Takagi pins DOUKI with Made in Japan.
Suzuki continued to attack Hiromu after the match with submissions. Takagi makes the save. Suzuki will battle Hiromu on Sunday in Round 2.
Suzuki terrorizes the Japanese and English announcers on his way back to the locker room.
New Japan Cup Matches:
Hirooki Goto vs. Dick Togo
Goto hit an ushigaroshi on Togo. Lights go out in Korakuen. Lights come back on and Togo is choking Goto with his metal wire. Referee is laying on the floor. EVIL comes to the ring. He grabs Goto’s staff and tries to hit him. Goto fights off both Togo and EVIL. Goto grabs his staff and hits EVIL in the back. EVIL goes to the floor. Goto hits Togo with the staff. Goto traps him in a Goto-Shiki and grabs his arm in a submission.
Togo taps out.
Hirooki Goto moves to the Quarterfinals to face the winner of CIMA vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru.
CIMA vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru
Kanemaru came out of nowhere to attack CIMA. He attacked CIMA’s leg with submissions. CIMA recovered and hit Meteora.
CIMA pinned Kanemaru.
CIMA will face Hirooki Goto in the Quarterfinals.
Match was fine. Kanemaru spent a lot of time attacking CIMA’s leg. CIMA was able to get to the top rope and connect with Meteora which is a double knee to the opponents face. This made Kanemaru’s offense look weak. CIMA sold the leg after the match but he could have won the match with a different move rather than a top rope finisher.
Kazuchika Okada vs. Master Wato
Okada hits a Landslide and a Rainmaker.
Okada pins Wato.
Kazuchika Okada goes to the Quarterfinals to face Taichi.
Another fine match. Wato brought good offense and submissions but Okada was working stiff. Wato seemed to lose steam as the match went on.
Okada tells Wato that it was a good try but he expected more from him. Okada thanks the audience and he will continue to make it rain.
The Round 2 of the New Japan Cup 2022 continues tomorrow.
