All Elite Wrestling presents its Revolution Pay Per View on Sunday night from Orlando, Florida. Here is what we think will happen:
AEW World Champion Adam Page vs Adam Cole
Dave: Let's look at recent booking. Adam Page has been in battles and won. Adam Cole has lost to Orange Cassidy with one of the lamest moves I have ever seen in my life (and don't tell me it was "unsanctioned so it doesn't count" because my eyes SAW IT). There is no way Cole should win here. Zero. Down the road, maybe. Right now he has not been booked strongly. The Title should stay with Page.
Mike: I don't think the time is right for an Adam Cole title win yet. To me, this looks to be a great match with a ton of near falls but in the end, Page went through a war with Kenny Omega and one with Lance Archer - and he retained. I don't see him losing to Cole at this juncture.
Richard: I will start off with the ‘hack’ response that Adam will win the match. This is the perfect match to explain some conversations I used to have with people who did not really follow the independent scene and they would say that they didn’t understand why someone is getting a title match when they haven’t done things in this company and they were not familiar with a wrestler’s work in another company. Adam Cole has not been booked like he was in NXT, ROH, or any other company so if he wins, it does not seem like the logical progression for the title. I think the man who should take the title from Page is MJF and I would either do it when they return to New York or a few weeks later at Double or Nothing. This is one of many matches on this show that will be hurt if there is a lot of (or any) interference. Cole comes close but Page kicks out of the Last Shot or Panama Sunrise and Page wins with the Buckshot Lariat.
Cory: This build has not been good at all, and it’s now at the point where this feels like a house show match while they are in Peoria IL. I have no doubt it will be a good match. I have no doubt both men will work hard. I also have no doubt that Page will win and it won’t help either guy. Page needs to keep the title until Kenny Omega comes back so they can pay off the Bucks stepping aside and letting Page beat Omega.
Anthony: AEW has backed themselves into the kind of corner WWE found themselves in 2002 when Triple H and Chris Jericho “main eventer” the show. Adam Page, bell to bell, is great. I just don't have a vested interest in him. Adam Cole lost to a HUG (I know I know it didn’t count). When he debuted, Cole was on fire. Today? We’re just waiting for Omega to return. Page retains here in should be an excellent match.
AEW Women’s Champion Britt Baker D.M.D. vs Thunder Rosa
Dave: What do I think will happen? Britt retains. What SHOULD happen? Rosa should take the Title and get a run. She deserves it and losing the belt could be the step in the development of Britt's character. Her going en fuego trying to get her belt back would make for good TV.
Mike: I think Thunder Rosa is awesome and she always gets one of the biggest live pops at AEW events, but my gut here is Britt retains.
Richard: Is this the time to take the title off Baker and give it to Rosa? If you don’t do a title change, is this the end of the road for Rosa to get this belt? They have had a great feud so far and this should be the end of it. Of the title matches on the show, this could be the best of them. The more Baker’s associates get involved, the less important this match will end up. Even though Rosa pinned Baker on Wednesday night, she will disprove the Inverse Transitive Theory of Go Home Show Booking. A new champion will be crowned.
Cory: Every time these two get in the ring one on one it’s amazing, so I expect this will be as well. Baker’s reign is stumbling a bit because she doesn’t have long standing feuds, and it now feels like they just have someone she will fight at the next Pay Per View. This is where that needs to be changed, and Baker should win with cheating, allowing Rosa to chase her and build Baker back up.
Anthony: Rematch time of the biggest AEW women’s match ever. I almost hate to see this match in this spot at Thunder Rosa is awesome, but she’s in there with one of the faces of the whole company. The good Doctor is way too hot right now to take the title off of her. Thunder Rosa will win the title, just not here.
AEW Tag Team Champions Jurassic Express vs reDRagon vs The Young Bucks
Dave: I expect the Bucks and reDRagon get in each other's way and the champs retain that way. The story is the tension in The Elite. They could either do what I said or pick one of the two teams to win, making the other jealous. I prefer the champs retain and The Elite feud without belts on the line.
Mike: I wonder if ReDragon end up with the titles here since the idea of every team in the company chasing them sounds really fun. I'd really like to see Santana and Ortiz added here somehow since it feels like they've been elbowed off the screen, so to speak. This will be the all out stunt show spectacle of the night, playing to the Bucks' strengths.
Richard: The odds are definitely against the champions with two teams that may be working together. However, will the Bucks or reDRagon get greedy and try to screw over the other when they have the match under control. It was great to give Jungle Boy a title, but I think it is time for new champions. This should be a very good match, but the more it is a reDRagon match than a match geared toward the other two teams. Does Christian get involved in this one to cost Jurassic Express the titles?
Cory: How weird is it that the Tag Team Champions are taking a back seat to the reDRagon/Young Bucks feud. This will be a crazy Young Bucks match with people flying all over the place, tons of high spots, a settling of the story with the Bucks and reDRagon, and Jurassic Express on the sidelines. The problem is that I don’t see a title change in the other two title matches, so the prediction I have is that reDRagon wins the titles to give them a push, Jurassic Express (which isn’t called that any more for some reason) will fade into a faction rather than a tag team, and the Bucks continue their story line chasing the titles.
Anthony: Anyone remember that Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus are champions? They are the parsley on the plate of this match, which will undoubtedly be a spectacle. You like Young Bucks insanity? This one’s for you. This isn’t a match so much as the continuation of the super Elite having tension. I like the Bucks here. They’ll get the audience to care about the titles again in short order.
CM Punk vs MJF in a Dog Collar Match
Dave: When they had MJF do the babyface promo, I expected that Punk would turn into WCW Sting at the PPV and get suckered there. Instead, it happened on Dynamite. Honestly, it took my interest in the match down in a big way, and it had been so high after Punk's promo a few weeks back. MJF left with all of the heat. If he also wins at the PPV, it makes Punk look even worse. If Punk doesn't win, I can't see how the finish won't be totally convoluted. They can't just have him job clean. The question is will Tony Khan put a loss on MJF. I think he should.
Mike: The right thing to do after the MJF promo in Bridgeport was to have him win again, but after what they did in Jacksonville, Punk has to win. He just has to. That would even it up (or make it 2-1, in MJF's eyes) and we can come back with a cage or some other big gimmick match in Long Island when they return there. I expect this to be BRUTAL given the way they've invoked the Piper vs. Valentine Starrcade match so often.
Richard: Based on last week’s promo by MJF, this match is the one I am looking forward to the most. For MJF to have the crowd behind him after some of the things he has done during his time in AEW. Punk’s reaction to that promo was great when he confronted MJF to ask if it was true. This week, did they do too much with the blood after MJF kicked Punk in the junk after the most disingenuous hug? Punk bled buckets on Dynamite but will both of them have to do more at the PPV? With the dog collar, MJF’s actions will cause more damage to be unleashed on both men. I think MJF needs the win since he should be on the road to the AEW World Championship.
Cory: This has been echoing the Raven/Punk ROH feud, and I don’t see a place where Punk needs to win. He came in to make stars, and losing to MJF will help MJF more than Punk winning will do anything. We seem to be right on the cusp of paying off Wardlow and MJF, so MJF needs this win in order to be a threat to Wardlow.
Anthony: Man if you asked me 2 weeks ago what would happen. I’d tell you I have I no idea. I was thinking MJF would string his promo of 2 weeks ago into this match to force Punk into a crisis of conscience and then lower the boom on him like he did on Dynamite this week. This is going to be a bloodbath. I really hope these guys would reconsider that but, based on what happened Wednesday, it almost has to be. MJF, under no circumstances, should be losing here. His drive to the AEW world title needs to go through this match
AEW TBS Champion Jade Cargill vs Tay Conti
Dave: Jade will lose one of these days but that day is not here yet. Conti is not the one who will upend her.
Mike: Jade is the franchise they are building. I enjoy Conti a lot but they aren't building Jade's undefeated streak to end it this quickly.
Richard: Jade has been improving from match to match and this is the biggest match of her career. Conti has shown that a certain company made a mistake with her and she has run with it in AEW. I don’t see Conti as the person who should beat Jade to win the title and end her undefeated streak. This should be a decent match as long as they don’t try to go too long. I did like how Conti and Anna outsmarted Jade and Dewey Cheatem and Howe by pointing out that it was less than 48 hours to the PPV so Conti could make contact with Jade.
Cory: I love Tay Conti, and this she’s a talent that AEW can build on. However, this thrown together at the last match isn’t how Jade will lose her title.
Anthony: I admit, I’m kind of worried here. Conti is quite good. Jade is passable. You’re asking a lot of Conti here to make this one good. Jade needs to be Godzilla here, mowing through a game yet out gunned challenger. Anything other than that could really expose here, and invested a lot here. Jade retains.
Bryan Danielson vs Jon Moxley
Dave: Bryan has been a heel. Mox has been a face. But if they have the match, bleed together (which I am sure will happen and I do not need to see), he has to partner up with him. I expect Bryan wins and that leads to Mox not approving of a lot of the things Bryan does in the future.
Mike: This should be a lot of fun. My gut here is Danielson traps Moxley and forces him to do the unthinkable - tap - so that he truly earns Mox's respect as a partner.
Richard: The thought of this match makes me very happy and even happier that I will get to experience it live. Bryan Danielson is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time and Jon Moxley is also close to the top of my list. While this might not be the match on the show that gets the most buzz and there is no title on the line, it should be a hell of a match. Danielson is showing his “I will kill you if I have to attitude” and Moxley will take everything thrown at him. Dusty Rhodes will be smiling watching the violence for the sake of violence. I think Moxley needs this match more than Danielson because of the time that Moxley took off and he needs to resume the momentum he had prior to that break. Danielson is an untouchable and if he loses, it only means he could get more violent.
Cory: This will be a crazy brawl, have too much blood and the winner should be Danielson, since he lost the last feud he had. That way, we can move forward in seeing if they formed a faction after the match, with Mox joining him. Am I 100% on that prediction? Not really, but storyline-wise, Mox and Danielson building up new talent and moving into feuds with other factions has me excited.
Anthony: I mentioned the Punk/MJF bloodbath already. My Spidey sense tells me these two will not be blading but are gonna go all out with the fisticuffs. In other words, we’re getting some hardway here. Luckily for us, this one is Step 1 of should be a very interesting story over the next few months. I say Moxley gets the win here but the tease of these 2 joining forces will only amp up higher.
Face of the Revolution Ladder Match for a Future AEW TNT Title Match featuring Keith Lee, Powerhouse Hobbs, Wardlow, Ricky Starks, Orange Cassidy and Christian.
Dave: I am thinking Wardlow wins and then sets up tension with MJF if he wins the TNT Title but Tony does love Orange soooooo....nah, he wouldn't...would he?
Mike: No way Keith Lee doesn't win here after that big build-up as the surprise.
Richard: The winner of this match gets to face the TNT champion in two weeks so the payoff will be quick. We have three people who can fly and three people who can be good bases for the action. Will we see Wardlow power bomb everyone in the match multiple times? If they plan to take the title off Sammy (or Sky if he beats Sammy next week), I would have Wardlow win the match. I wonder if we will see some point in the match when Hobbs and Starks are at the top of the ladder and they have to fight over the prize. My other choice to win is Starks.
Cory: Wardlow has to win and then he has to be Sammy for the TNT title because MJF said he couldn’t do it, and if he can’t do it, it KILLS Wardlow.
Anthony: They teased us on Dynamite this week when MJF released Wardlow of his obligation to have him the TNT title. That right there tells me that this story will go in that direction. I give the nod to Wardlow in this one.
Chris Jericho vs Eddie Kingston
Dave: Given the way this has gone, Eddie should go over. A win does nothing for Jericho but conversely it helps Eddie a lot.
Mike: To me, Eddie will get more out of this taking the loss, because he's made and he's kept important based on sympathy the fans have for him as the guy fighting until he has nothing left. I doubt this will be a one and done after that great promo segment in Bridgeport, so my guess is Jericho wins here using underhanded means after it's clear Kingston has his number.
Richard: This should be a brawl more than a match and I think both men can bring it. I know that I was not excited about this match when it was announced, but the promo segment last week made me care a little more. Will this be a one on one match or will we see some former Inner Circle members get involved in the match? I hope it does not get to that point.
Cory: Did you realize Eddie Kingston hasn’t won a PPV match yet? Jericho can give him that win, there will be shenanigans from Santana and Ortiz, and Jericho completes his heel turn as The Influencer. I also expect this to be an all out brawl, but not nuts, since we have a dog collar match later in the show.
Anthony: Eddie Kingston needs this badly. His credibility as a guy who might win is badly damaged. AEW needs to remind us of what a real threat he can be. Jericho absolutely does not need this win. Kingston finds himself exactly where Jericho was in 2001. Here’s hoping they do the right thing. The pick here is Kingston.
Andrade El Idolo, Matt Hardy, and Isiah Kassidy vs Sting, Darby Allin, and Sammy Guevara in a Tornado Match
Dave: If the Matt-Andrade stuff was working I would say put them over here. Since it's not, they should do the job. Maybe then Jeff Hardy can come in and "get Matt back to where he needs to be" because this sure isn't it.
Mike: Unless we are really going to believe Jeff Hardy isn't coming in, the finish will be Hardy getting pinned after having a complete meltdown with Andrade's side. Then Jeff can arrive after his 90 days are up, Matt can go fully deleted, etc. Team Sting gets the win.
Richard: Making this a tornado tag match guarantees that this will be out of control and the referee can stand in the corner watching everything happen until the finish of the match. Will there be any further tension between Guevara and Aliin after the TNT Title match on Friday night? Will THIS IS STEVE have to talk to the kids about playing nice on Sunday? Darby, Sammy, and Sting should get the win with Sammy pinning Kassidy. Hopefully Andrade could build on the momentum he got from the Triple Threat Match.
Cory: I have no idea what they are doing with Matt Hardy, Kassidy seems to be the chump who gets beaten and humiliated by Hardy all the time, and Andrade is, at best, a comedy character now who doesn’t understand that Darby doesn’t work for Sting. Sting’s team should get the win because it’s a better story if Andrade’s team fails with Kassidy being pinned yet again.
Anthony: I cannot express how disinterested I am in this whole thing. The AHFO is a joke, they make Team Taz 2020 look effective. I don’t see any scenario where the faces lose here. Let’s only hope this is mercifully short so the real compelling matches have enough time.
Leyla Hirsch vs Kris Statlander in a Buy In Match
Dave: I like the momentum Leyla has but I am not ready to put her over Kris yet, especially since she is the heel. I have this be super close and Kris wins, but Leyla gets elevated in the loss.
Mike: I am excited for this one and hope they give it some time. In the end, Hirsh is being built for Red Velvet, so she should go over here.
Richard: We are going to see a new side of Kris Statlander because of what Leyla Hirsch did to her after their previous match. I am a big fan of Leyla’s work and want to see her get a chance to do more than be part of Dark and Dark Elevation matches for the most part. Will we see Statlander try to go too far only to have Hirsch cheat to get the win.
Cory: With the single video we got to hype this match, I am down for it. Layla’s promo had fire and gave this a story that you can latch on to, Statlander was serious in her promo as well, and I expect both of them to pull out strength moves. Statlander will go over, but Layla should be booked to look strong here.
Anthony: Great to see Hirsch get an opportunity here to shine. I’m enjoying Statlander a lot since pulling back on the alien gimmick. Hirsch has such a unique look and gimmick. She’s a badass and should be given the chance to show it here
Hook vs QT Marshall in a Buy in Match
Dave: Hook wins, pretty easily.
Mike: Brother, QT ain't going to the pay window, as Dusty Rhodes used to say.
Richard: This match should be shorter than the time it will take to read my thoughts on the match. Marshall should get in the first move or two and then it becomes all Hook until he chokes Marshall ou
Cory: Hook and his unfortunate hair will win without breaking a sweat.
Anthony: SEND HOOK…to the pay window after he dispatches ol QT.
Death Triangle vs House of Black in a Buy In Match
Dave: I think House of Black just have to win here. A loss won't hurt Triangle but it would hurt the House.
Mike: I am calling it for Death Triangle.
Richard: The newest talent in AEW gets his first PPV Buy In match as he joins Pac and Penta against the House of Black. This will probably be the best of the Buy In matches by default because of the talent in the match. The battle of the giants between Redbeard and King should be good. Do you have the House of Black lose this match? Pac and Buddy will be the highlight of this match. The House of Black will get the win.
