TANAHASHI VS. IBUSHI: NEW JAPAN ON AXS TV REPORT

By Mike Johnson on 2022-02-03 23:02:00

Welcome to this week's New Japan Pro Wrestling on AXS TV report!

G1 CLIMAX 28 Final: Hiroshi Tanahashi with Katsuyori Shibata vs. Kota Ibushi with Kenny Omega.

They go back and forth early with some really nice wrestling.  Tanahashi keeps Ibushi neutralized on the mat with a body scissor.  Ibushi made it to the ropes.  Tanahashi obviously had the early advantage so Ibushi tried to throw him off his game with some strikes.  Tanahashi took him back to the mat.  Ibushi finally escaped and lit Tanahashi up with some kicks.

Tanahashi fired back and went for a Scorpion Lock but Ibushi made it to the ropes.  Ibushi, his legs hurting, fought from behind, then nailed a big slam before hitting a moonsault for a near fall.  He followed up with an EVIL doublestomp on the apron, then continued with the kicks.  Tanahashi caught his leg and snapped Ibushi over with a dragon screw legwhip.

Tanahashi fired back with several dropkicks but was stopped when he ascended to the top.  Tanahashi was worked over but came back with a Slingblade.  They battled back and forth.  Tanahashi was sent over the top but pulled himself back in.   Ibushi drilled him and nailed a package piledriver for another near fall.  Tanahashi battled back and went for a Texas Cloverleaf submission.  Again, Ibushi made it to the ropes and forced a break.

Ibushi went to the floor.  Tanahashi hit his frog splash (the high flow) to the floor.  Ibushi was almost counted out but returned at the last second.  He ate anohter sling blade for a two count.  Ibushi caught him with a rana.  Tanahashi rolled to the outside.  Ibushi hit this INSANE springboard moonsault to the floor.  Tanahashi was tossed back in and placed on the corner, where Ibushi nailed a reverse rana back into the ring for a close two count.

Tanahashi was holding his head and neck at this point.  Ibushi was on the attack, nailing a few suplexes but unable to put his opponent away.    It looked like that was the end for Tanahashi after a series of palm strikes.  Tanahashi was finally like THE HELL WITH THIS and fought through the attack with a hard slap.  Ibushi fired back and they battled until Ibushi was like THE HELL WITH THIS and nailed a lariat.

They began striking each other as they fought to their feet and then kept battering each other.  Tanahashi nailed German suplex variation for a two count.  He went to the top for the froggy splash but Ibushi pulled his knees up.  He drilled the Bomaye to Tanahashi, then moonsaulted over into a double knee strike to the chest.  He smashed Tanahashi into the corner and kept beating the hell out of him with kicks to the back.

Tanahashi rolled to the outside but Ibushi nailed another German suplex.  He nailed a big powerbomb for a CLOSE near fall.  Tanahashi kept fighting back and went to the top.  He nailed a frog splash into the standing Ibushi.  Tanahashi keeps going and finally scored the pinfall after a THIRD High Flow.

Your winner, Hiroshi Tanahashi!

As you can imagine, this was just great.  If you have never seen this, it's worth to track down and enjoy.  It's 35 minutes of tremendous pro wrestling storytelling.
