WWE NXT CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TO CEASE TO EXIST NEXT WEEK

By Mike Johnson on 2021-12-29 00:45:00

During last night's WWE NXT broadcast, it was noted that the winner of Roderick Strong vs. Carmelo Hayes at NXT New Year's Evil next Tuesday will be the North American Champion going forward, so as of next week, the WWE NXT Cruiserweight Championship will be no more.

The Cruiserweight title was incorporated during 2016's Cruiserweight Classic tournament, which then launched a full fledged Cruiserweight division and series 205 Live.  The hope had been to launch 205 Live as its own touring brand but those plans were shut down after just a lone weekend of live events.  The 205 Live series has lived on, although reduced to 30 minutes, in great part due to a deal with Hulu that paid for rights fees for the series.

17 competitors held the championship over its run, most recently Roderick Strong.
