HISTORIC WRESTLEMANIA VENUE WILL NOT BE DEMOLISHED

By Mike Johnson on 2021-12-22 14:59:00

The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to invest in a $200-250 milllon renovation of Toronto's Skydome (now known as the Rogers Center) instead of demolishing the stadium in favor of erecting a new, smaller version of the venue, as had been discussed for several years.  The baseball stadium will now be modernized and continue on as a major venue in Toronto.

As Skydome, the venue was the host of April 1990's Wrestlemania VI, featuring WWF Champion Hulk Hogan vs. WWF Intercontinental Champion Ultimate Warrior and March 2002's Wrestlemania X8 featuring The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan.  Beyond those two Wrestlemanias, the venue hosted ten WWF house shows as well as one WCW event.

The venue also hosted the first-ever championship win for WWE Hall of Famer Edge, as he defeated Jeff Jarrett for the Intercontinental title on July 24, 1999 as a surprise after substituting for Ken Shamrock, who missed the event.  That moment has a great "circle of life" aura to it as Edge was sitting ringside for Hogan vs. Warrior at Wrestlemania VI.

The stadium, with an official capacity of 53, 506 fans (more for pro wrestling), was opened in 1989, the home of the Toronto Blue Jays.
