CONFRONTATION BETWEEN FORMER UFC RIVALS ATTEMPTED FOR AAA TRIPLEMANIA REGIA

By Oliver Tayor on 2021-11-29 07:20:00

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide head of creative Konnan revealed on his Keepin It 100 podcast that the company hoped to book a confrontation between former Ultimate Fighting Championship rivals Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos at Triplemanía Regia on December 4 in the Monterrey Baseball Stadium.

Velasquez will make his AAA return teaming with Pagano and Psycho Clown against L.A. Park, Rey Escorpión and Taurus at the show and, per Konnan, dos Santos would have appeared after the match to challenge Velasquez.

However, the plans were scrapped due to dos Santos’ pre-existing obligations elsewhere. Konnan began discussing the matter at the 91:52 mark of the episode.

ESPN’s Marc Raimondi later corroborated Konnan’s claims on Twitter, saying American Top Team founder Dan Lambert would have also joined dos Santos.

dos Santos defeated Velasquez to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship in 2011, though Velasquez defeated dos Santos to win the title back in 2012. Velasquez then successfully defended the title against dos Santos in their third and final fight in 2013.

dos Santos made his wrestling debut with All Elite Wrestling earlier this year, teaming with Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky to defeat Chris Jericho, Jake Hager and Sammy Guevara on the October 15 episode of Rampage. He also featured in the Minneapolis Street Fight tag team match at the Full Gear pay-per-view on November 13.
