ISHIMORI VS. DESPERADO & MORE: 11/15 NJPW BEST OF SUPER JUNIORS 28 REPORT FROM TOKYO, JAPAN

By James Kurokawa  on 2021-11-15 16:58:00

11-15-21 Results from New Japan's Best of Super Jr. 28 from Korakuen Hall, Tokyo Japan:

New Japan officials began the event with an announcement of 2022 being the 50th anniversary of New Japan as a company.  This will be a year-long celebration of this anniversary.  Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma and Hiroshi Tanahashi joined the officials in the ring for the announcement.  They unveiled boots and a handprint of Andre the Giant.  The announced a new website celebrating 50 years of New Japan.  They announced new products to be sold at the New Japan online store.

1. Ryohei Oiwa vs. Kosei Fujita

Both men fight to a draw.

Best of the Super Jr. 28 Tournament Matches:

2 . YOH vs. DOUKI

DOUKI pins YOH with Suplex de La Luna.

Good match.  Great win for DOUKI, who is now 2-0.  YOH looked great in the match, but is 0-2 already.   This may be premature, but I thought the major feud heading into BOSJ 28 was SHO vs. YOH.  It seems like YOH is taking a backseat to his former partner.

3.  Ryusuke Taguchi vs. BUSHI

BUSHI pins Taguchi after hitting an MX.

4. Master Wato vs. Robbie Eagles

Eagles goes for the Ron Miller Special.  Wato traps him in a small package.   Eagles reverses the small package.

Eagles pins Wato.

Solid match.  Both men threw some wicked kicks.  This was two babyfaces trying to outwrestle each other.

5.  Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs. El Phantasmo

Phantasmo has a leather vest with flashing lights so bright that it could cause seizures.

Kanemaru pins ELP with a small package after hitting a low blow.

Another solid match.  This was the opposite of Wato vs. Eagles.   ELP and Kanemaru tried every trick in their arsenal to beat the other.  Heel Master was just quicker with the low blow.

6.  Hiromu Takahashi vs. SHO

Hiromu proudly displays his scrapbook with SHO inside, as he prances to the ring.   He gives the scrapbook to Milano Collection AT at ringside.

SHO attacked the left arm of Hiromu with multiple submissions.   Hiromu countered with a Death Valley Driver on the ring apron.  Fast paced match.  SHO pushes Hiromu into the referee, who takes a bump.  House of Torture comes to the ring.   Togo attacks Hiromu and chokes him out.   Yujiro hits Hiromu with his Pimp Stick.  EVIL hits Everything is Evil on Hiromu.   SHO revives the referee.  SHO applies the Snake Bite.  The referee sees Hiromu is out cold.

SHO gets the win.

SHO refuses to release the hold.   Shingo Takagi leaves Japanese Commentary to make the save for his teammate.

The day after EVIL, Yujiro and Togo lose in WTL 2021 to a nut shot by Yano and Tanahashi, SHO needs their help to beat Hiromu.  This is the second match in a row that SHO needed help from his partners.  SHO is becoming a great heel and he could do this on his own.  This continued pattern of constant interference will keep them hated as heels, which could be the intent.  However, knowing that every match for each member of the House of Torture will end with some cheating or referee manipulation, then the matches are pointless, in my opinion.  The break up of Roppongi 3K could have been a big angle and story which could last for months.  The story that New Japan is telling now is:  1) YOH is becoming a jobber, and 2) SHO cannot win on his own.  It is still early in the tournament so they can turn this around, hopefully soon.

7.  El Desperado vs. Taiji Ishimori

Ishimori went to work on Desperado's left arm.  He brutalized his arm with chairs and on the guardrails.  Desperado is able to hit a Dragonscrew and apply Numero Dos.  Both men are struggling with their moves due to their injured appendages.  Both men know each other well and were able to counter each other's moves.  Ishimori goes for the Bone Lock.  Desperado reverses into Numero Dos.  Ishimori counters back into the Bone Lock.  Ishimori hits a Lung Blower.  Two count.  Desperado hits a right hand punch to Ishimori's jaw.  Desperado goes for Pinche Loco.  Ishimori spins out and applies the Bone Lock.  Ishimori rolls him into the middle of the ring.

Desperado taps out to Ishimori's Bone Lock.

Great match.  This is what SHO vs. Hiromu could have been.  Ishimori got the win on his own, without Bullet Club.  Ishimori and Desperado are two of the best in New Japan's Jr. Division right now.  Desperado is a tough position.  He has lost to SHO and Taiji Ishimori in the BOSJ 28 Tournament.  Both will deserve title shots in the future.  Desperado will need to regroup and refocus so that list of challengers does not get longer.

Current Standings in the Best of Super Jr 28:
