Every sport throws out some amazing moments that make you shout “oh my God!” in a Joey Styles esque way!
UFC is no exception to this. We’ve seen some absolutely crazy moments in the history of the octagon and here, we’re going to take you through our picks for the top 5 OMG moments in UFC.
[5] Jorge Masvidal Knocks Out Ben Askren
Dana White once said that he believed this was the greatest knockout in UFC history. The two fighters were set for a welterweight bout in Vegas. At the time, Askren entered the T-Mobile Arena with an undefeated streak - honing in on a shot at the welterweight title. If you were to bet on this marquee MMA fight, Askren would likely have been your man.
But Jorge Masvidal completely changed the script. As soon as the fight started, Masvidal burst towards Askren with a destructive upper knee strike, followed with two ground punches. Immediately after, Masvidal was declared the victor after only 5 seconds.
Masvidal and Askren gained a professional level of respect for one another, with no animosity. Although the two fighters’ careers wildly differed after the fight, they both deserve huge respect for their contributions to UFC, and as White believes - that knockout will remain in the top moments of UFC history.
[4] Nate Diaz Makes Conor McGregor Tap Out
March 5th, 2016. A date that will live in infamy for UFC fans. The Notorious Conor McGregor was set to take on Nate Diaz. This fight wasn’t even meant to happen originally, but due to various injuries and other outside issues - this fight became the one to watch.
Before the bout, both men gave each other verbal taunts. Especially McGregor, who goaded Diaz for a while even before this. The fight itself was something to behold though.
It started strong with McGregor getting in rough and ready, taking it to Diaz’s face. It even seemed that Conor was insulting Nate at times in the fight. Perhaps thinking this was to be another easy win for him.
But, just when you thought McGregor was going in for the kill - Diaz completely altered the tide. He lands a Stockton slap and grounds the Irish fighter. After locking in a rear-naked choke, it was game over for McGregor after only 2 rounds - although Diaz wasn’t “surprised!”.
Although McGregor “retired” following the fight, he would return and the two fighters would rematch, with the Irishman getting the victory. Even though some regard the rematch as one of the best fights in UFC history, it was this moment that made us yell OMG at the TV screen.
[3] The Staredown: Robbie Lawler And Rory MacDonald
Talk about an OMG moment. This was one of the bloodiest, brutal, violent and iconic fights in UFC history - in fact, fight of the year in 2015.
After sounding the end of the round, fighters should take a break and go to their corner. But these two had other ideas. Staring each other down in the octagon. Lawler turns and spits out some blood, while the referee centers himself to make sure the two don’t continue the bout!
Lawler, although completely battered and bruised by MacDonald, finished the fight off with a devastating blow to MacDonald’s nose - managing to retain his title.
Until that point though, it was too close to call but many tipped Rory to be in front. But in the fifth round, Robbie stuns us all by winning it. Truly, to this day - this fight is a difficult one to top - and that staredown! What a moment.
[2] Leslie Smith Ear Explodes
UFC 180. Leslie Smith is fighting Jessica Eye.
Smith went into the fight with cauliflower ear - which is a common condition in some sports, more notably with locks in Rugby Union.
During the bout, Eye can see her opponent’s ear was beginning to swell up badly and she targeted this. With one swift strike, Smith’s ear exploded. The fight was called off and it remains one of the craziest incidents, and most shocking, in UFC history. Truly an OMG moment to remember.
[1] Conor McGregor Knocks Out Jose Aldo
This was one of the most anticipated fights in the MMA world. The two fighters met in 2015 for a unification bout and the crowd along with all of us watching at home were ready for a complete spectacle.
This was not the case, but it did give us the biggest OMG moment in UFC. Within 13 seconds, McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo. The aftermath saw McGregor go up a weight division, still holding the title - much to the anger of Jose Aldo.
For total shock value, this was the biggest OMG moment in UFC.
