KOTA IBUSHI INJURY UPDATE, ALL JAPAN IN KAWASAKI AND MORE FROM JAPAN

By Oliver Taylor on 2021-10-22 13:21:00

New Japan Pro Wrestling

New Japan Pro Wrestling held a press conference today with its chairman Naoki Sugabayashi and G1 Climax 31 winner Kazuchika Okada.

Sugabayashi confirmed Kota Ibushi suffered a dislocated right shoulder during his G1 Climax main event against Kazuchika Okada at New Japan’s show yesterday in the Nippon Budokan.

Sugabayashi also said the company will be increasing the number of matches on each card moving forward, citing the current COVID-19 infection levels in Japan as well as the vaccination status of staff and wrestlers.

Okada spoke second. He requested to hold the retired IWGP Heavyweight Championship instead of receiving a IWGP World Heavyweight Championship challenge rights certificate as his reward for winning the G1 Climax.

Okada said he wants to hold the title until Ibushi recovers. Of course, Ibushi unified the IWGP Heavyweight Championship with the IWGP Intercontinental Championship earlier this year to create the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

Okada reasoned that rather than holding a briefcase containing the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship challenge rights certificate, holding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship would be proof of his promise to Ibushi to face him again.

Okada said he would be willing to defend a IWGP World Heavyweight Championship challenge rights certificate against Tama Tonga, since Tonga challenged Okada yesterday, but he wants to be the G1 Champion” to fire up New Japan in his own way. Sugabayashi asked Okada for some time for the company to consider the proposal.
