HOW DO WRESTLERS TRAIN AT HOME?

By Kendall Jenkins on 2021-09-28 09:37:00

Wrestlers train as hard as, if not harder than, any other variety of athlete on Earth, maintaining some serious size while always being aware that they must also maintain an almost superhuman physique.

This all means that just doing the bare minimum of training is never enough, especially if a wrestler wants to become one of his company’s main box office stars. To get to that level athletes have to go the extra mile, part of which involves training hard during their spare time.

Here we look at just some of the workouts that pro wrestlers do at home or during their free time, many of which are borrowed from other sports, but all of which are designed to keep them on point for when it comes time to shine at the likes of WrestleMania or Summer Slam.

Whether they are lightweight highflyers or heavyweight powerhouses, wrestlers are always looking for ways to perfect their technique and conditioning so they can further wow the fans

Staying Flexible

Lots of people think that because most wrestlers are huge musclebound machines they do not need to do things like yoga and pilates. However, nothing could be further from the truth as many contemporary wrestling maneuvers require vast amounts of flexibility to be pulled off correctly.

Because so many other forms of training incorporated into a wrestler’s schedule are hard on the joints and muscles, sometimes it is a good idea to give high impact exercises a break at home. This makes yoga and pilates the perfect antidotes to tight muscles and weary limbs which are desperately in need of a stretch. Both forms of exercise are ideal for home workouts as they require a minimal amount of space and very little equipment apart from a yoga mat and an open mind.

Diamond Dallas Page is the poster boy for yoga in the world of wrestling, having started up his very own yoga company called DDP Yoga or DDPY. Since setting the company up he has convinced stars like Chris Jericho, Gold Dust, Mick Foley, and The Miz all to get their stretch on.

Sometimes the difference between a life ending injury and lifting a championship belt above your head is the extra training you put in at home

Keeping Cardio Up to Speed

When your frame is so packed with heavy muscle, it is a real grind to do large amounts of physio training after having attacked the weights room all day. However, to make it through matches that can sometimes drag on for over twenty minutes, wrestlers have no option but to be fit. After all, the last thing you want to do is run out of puff just when it comes time to administer your finishing move.

Usually, cardio comes in the form of running, biking, or swimming, but there are now lots of home workouts available that will get the blood pumping without a wrestler even having to leave their living room or invest in expensive equipment, which is great news for mere mortals who wish to follow their lead.

Home Gyms All the Rage for Major Wrestling Stars

Of course, while all this use of things like yoga and calisthenics is great, most wrestlers reach the top by packing on copious amounts of muscle mass, something that can only be achieved with the help of a state-of-the-art gym.

Not content with getting a gym membership like everyone else, most top WWE or AEW stars now insist on having a private home gym setup within the confines of their private residence. Some of the stars who are particularly renowned for having enormous home gym facilities are Kane and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, with the latter even taking a travelling gym with him to his movie sets wherever they may be in the world. Now that is taking home workouts to a whole other level!
