JON MOXLEY VS. NICK GAGE DOCUMENTARY BEING RELEASED THIS WEEK & MORE GCW NEWS & NOTES

By Mike Johnson on 2021-09-27 12:04:00

A special 20 minute documentary looking at the 10/9 Jon Moxley vs. Nick Gage Death Match that will headline Game Changer Wrestling's return to Atlantic City will be released this Friday 10/1.  An advance teaser for the documentary (full disclosure - I was interviewed for the doc) has been released:

GCW ran back to back events last week in Queens, NY at the Melrose Ballroom with EmoFight on Thursday 9/23 and Getlostalot on Friday 9/24.  They sold out well in advance on 9/24, in part to Homicide vs. Minoru Suzuki on top and drew in the 500 range on Thursday with zero announced beyond Jimmy Jacobs appearing to sing his ROH-era "Lacey" song.

The Emo Fight was headlined by Jacobs defeating Atticus Cogar, complete with Lacey getting involved and reuniting with Jacobs for the first time in years.   The idea was that Jacobs would sing his Lacey song, which he wrote for ROH years ago and ended up saving his ROH job at the time with, when Cogar interrupted the performance.   He said that he was saving Jacobs from himself since there was no way he knew the lyrics all these years later and was probably snorting vicodin.  They had an impromptu bout with Lacey, unadvertised, hitting the ring to save Jacobs and setting up the finish so the show closed with the Randy Savage/Elizabeth Wrestlemania 7-esque reunion.  Cogar was great in his role and you get the sense he might be the next great act that GCW "breaks" and exposes.

Underneath, Allie Katch defeated the debuting Gabby Ortiz.  Effy defeated Jimmy LLoyd.  Everett Connors defeated Dyln McKay, who originally trained at Matt Tremont's school in New Jersey and looked to have tremendous potential here.  In a six way, Dante Leon defeated Steve Sanders, Colby Corino, Matt Vandagriff, Lucky 13 and Chris Carter.  Corino is rapidly becoming one of the best wrestlers on the independents anywhere and is going to end up being truly sought after in the coming years, if not sooner.  In another six way, Treehouse Lee defeated AJ Gray (absolutely one to keep an eye on), Tony Deppen, Cole Radrick, Yoya and Jordan Oliver.   Yoya was a last second addition as Alex Zayne had travel issues due to a delayed flight.  Oliver is right up there with Corino as someone who is improving in leaps and bounds every month.  There were musical acts over the course of the evening, including AEW's Marko Stunt.  Nick Gage came out as a "DJ" where he basically riled up the crowd before introducing Jimmy Lloyd.

The big draw obviously for GetLostAlot was Suzuki vs. Homicide with the New Japan legend facing NYC's favorite son on his own turf.  They went a little under 20 minutes and both worked really hard here in front of an audience that was willing this to be something larger than life.  You could feel Homicide was working much harder than he probably needed at this point of his career, especially in NYC where he's a made man, out of pride.   Suzuki finally got the win and thanked NYC and Homicide, promising he would return.    This was a lot of fun, as has been much of Suzuki's recent appearances in the United States.

There was a big angle underneath with Matt Cardona, who had a great run as the outsider winning the GCW title from Nick Gage in a Death Match doing everything he could to tweak the die-hard fans, showing up to demand he be added to Moxley vs. Gage on 10/9.  That led to a match where Cardona put the Internet Championship he's had since the days of is old YouTube series on the line against Effy with the idea that if he successfully defended, he would be added to the Atlantic City bout.  Instead, Cardona lost the title he's had for a decade to Effy, which got a big pop.   The idea here was that Cardona had screwed himself and was done but obviously there will be more down the line.  The crowd absolutely relished all of this, singing and mocking Cardona out the door as they have no respect for him as the sports-entertainment interloper intruding in their world and their fun.

Nick Gage defeated another beloved NYC starlwart, Grim Reefer, underneath.  This was the right market and venue for this as locally, Reefer is very much beloved and respected.  Mance Warner and Matt Justice retained their GCW Tag Titles, defeating Starboy Charlie and Chris Dickinson.  I don't know what to say about this one other than they beat the living crap out of each other!  Taiji Ishimori was in from Japan, debuting here and having a fun match against Tony Deppen in the process, with Ishimori going over.  Deppen is the middle of putting out a pretty damn phenomenal series of performances.  Alex Zayne, who was a regular here before his WWE run, had a fun opening match with AR Fox, who remains criminally underrated.  Lots of big spots here.

There was another Six Way underneath with a surprise appearance from early ROH and Jersey All Pro talent Deranged working in front of his hometown, which popped for him.  Ninja Mack won the six-way, which also featured Jimmy Lloyd, Cole Radrick, Dante Leon and Nick Wayne.   Mack hits some incredible highspots and that was what this one was all about.  LLoyd, who does a lot of the Deathmatch stuff, was very good as the base for a lot of talents' high flying.  Also on the card, AJ Gray defeated Yoya in a bout where Yoya took all sorts of beatings and punishment with the idea that he ascended a level because he went down fighting and was shown respect by Gray after.  Atticus Cogar defeated Jordan Oliver in another strong match that will probably be looked back years from now as "remember them when" on the independents.
