TETSUYA NAITO OUT, G1 CLIMAX RAMIFICATIONS, FREEDOMS AND MORE FROM JAPAN

By Oliver Taylor on 2021-09-21 09:22:00

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Tetsuya Naito has damaged the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee and has withdrawn from G1 Climax 31, New Japan Pro Wrestling announced today.

Naito’s injury will have significant ramifications throughout the rest of the G1 Climax, due to the difficulty of rebooking any entire round-robin tournament, and potentially as far as Wrestle Kingdom 16 and beyond depending on the severity of the injury.

Naito would have absolutely been planned to pencilled in for a marquee match at the event next January, perhaps multiple matches across the three nights.

Needless to say, Naito has forfeited his remaining matches and all of his remaining opponents – Tanga Loa, Shingo Takagi, Yujiro Takahashi, Toru Yano, KENTA, Tomohiro Ishii, Kota Ibushi and Great-O-Khan – have received two points. BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata are all substituting for Naito on various shows.

-. Masakatsu Funaki (2-0 record): 4 points
3. Akitoshi Saito (0-2 record): 0 points

If Kaito Kiyomiya defeats or draws with Keiji Mutoh, he will win A block with six or five points and an undefeated 3-0 or 2-0-1 record. However, if Mutoh defeats Kiyomiya then he will win A block with five points.

If Masaaki Mochizuki defeats or draws with Kenoh, he will win B block with six or five points and an undefeated 3-0 or 2-0-1 record.

If Kenoh defeats Mochizuki and Kendo Kashin defeats Daiki Inaba, there will be a three-way tie at the top of B block as Kashin defeated Kenoh but lost to Mochizuki, Kenoh lost to Kashin but defeated Mochizuki and Mochizuki defeated Kashin but lost to Kenoh.

If Kenoh defeats Mochizuki and Kashin draws with or loses to Inaba, Kenoh will win B block with four points as he would have the head-to-head tiebreaker against Mochizuki.

If Kazushi Sakuraba defeats Katsuhiko Nakajima and Masato Tanaka defeats Kotaro Suzuki, Sakuraba and Tanaka will finish tied at the top of C block with five points.

If Sakuraba defeats Nakajima and Tanaka draws with Suzuki or Sakuraba draws with Nakajima and Tanaka loses to Suzuki, Sakuraba will win C block with one more point than Tanaka. Obviously, the same situation applies with Sakuraba and Tanaka’s results reversed to allow Tanaka to win C block with one more point than Sakuraba.

If Nakajima defeats Sakuraba and Tanaka loses to Suzuki, Nakajima will win C block with four points. However, if Nakajima defeats Sakuraba and Tanaka draws with Suzuki then Tanaka will win C block as Tanaka has the head-to-head tiebreaker against Nakajima.

The winner of Kazuyuki Fujita versus Masakatsu Funaki will win D block. If the match ends in a draw, Fujita and Funaki will finish tied at the top of D block with five points.
