Luke Hawx, who appeared on the NWA 73 PPV last week, was profiled for his work as the Wrestling Coordinator on Starz's Heels in the latest issue of emmy, the official magazine for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
In a funny story, Hawx noted that when he was 10 years old attending an event in Louisiana, Terry Funk was being beaten up by several heels. Worried, the young Hawx darted into the locker room, finding Paul Orndorff and screaming that Funk needed help.
"Paul Orndorff, Mr. Wonderful, put his arms around me, walked me out of the dressing room and said, 'Terry can handle himself.' I couldn't believe they wouldn't come out and help Terry."
Hawx noted that acting and stunt work in New Orleans, where he is from, including a role in Logan, led to Heels stunt coordinator Artie Malesci offering Hawx the Wrestling Coordinator role. Hawx brought a team of talents from his Wildkat Sports wrestling promotion and school from Louisiana to Georgia, where Heels is filmed.
Hawx noted a big part in the process of training the cast for the series was "making them trust they can do what needed to be done." He noted that for one actress, it was simply a matter of instilling confidence and trust in that she could handle the physicality in the gym and in training and "it was night and day."
The profile noted that Heels lead Stephen Amell was injured performing a Van Terminator (in a scene that opens the series' pilot) with Hawx pointing out, "Steve had practiced it multiple times. Wrestling has a stigma for being fake. It's not fake. It's entertainment. People get hurt. But the actors didn't want stunt doubles. They said, 'I want to see myself on TV.'"
The article also revealed that Hawx will be appearing as a character later in the season for Heels as "The Hole." The series' fourth episode will air this Sunday.
Hawx is currently working as the Wrestling Coordinator for the forthcoming Disney Channel series Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion, which is currently filming its first season, and wrestled last week in Alaska for WrestlePro and St. Louis for the National Wrestling Alliance, teaming with his son Perry "PJ" Hawx, who appears in Heels as Denny the referee.

As noted above, Hawx is a native of New Orleans. Hawx announced this week that his family, like so many others, is currently displaced as a result of Hurricane Ida. For details on ways you can help those in the Gulf Coast, click here.
