PWInsider.com broke last night that John Cena had exited WWE in order to focus on other film commitments following Saturday night's Summerslam PPV.
This morning, Cena commented, writing:
Words cannot describe how appreciative I am that the @WWEUniverse allowed me the opportunity to return and perform. Thank you staff, superstars, and most of all FANS for giving me an unforgettable summer at “home” with my “family”. The journey takes me away now but I’ll C U soon.

Currently, Cena is only scheduled for the 9/10 Friday Night Smackdown taping at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Cena is expected to work a dark match that night.
Beyond that, WWE is going forward with the understanding that he won't be available for them for the foreseeable future due to filming commitments. There is no timetable for another potential return, WWE sources confirmed last night.
Cena wrestled 14 matches this summer between WWE TV tapings, live events and last night's Summerslam PPV. He actually made more appearances than WWE expected at his own request, wanting to appear and perform as much as possible before he would have other responsibilities. The timing of the run helped promote the recently released DC Comics film The Suicide Squad, where Cena portrayed Peacemaker.
Cena's latest comedy Vacation Friends, a Hulu co-production, will debut on the streaming service on 8/27, telling the story of "a straight-laced couple that has fun with a rowdy couple on vacation in Mexico. When they return to the states, they discover that the crazy couple they met in Mexico followed them back home." Cena appeared on GMA this morning to promote the film:
Cena is next slated to film a role for spy film Argyle, the next film from writer and director Matthew Vaughn. The film, based on spy novel Argylle from author Ellie Conway, follows “the world’s greatest spy” ‘Argylle’ as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure and is slated to be the first film in a planned trilogy. Apple recently paid as much as $200 million for the rights to the film. There is no word what role Cena will be playing.
