OSPREAY RETURNS, NEW JAPAN RESURGENCE, NOAH HEADING TO BUDOKAN HALL AND MORE FROM JAPAN

By Oliver Taylor on 2021-08-15 09:15:00

New Japan Pro Wrestling

New Japan Pro Wrestling held its Resurgence show last night in The Torch at L.A. Coliseum, Los Angeles, California.

The full results were:

• Barrett Brown, Bateman and Misterioso def. Jordan Clearwater, Kevin Knight and The DKC
• Karl Fredericks def. Alex Coughlin
• Clark Connors, Ren Narita and TJP def. Fred Rosser, Rocky Romero and Wheeler Yuta

• Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson def. Jon Moxley and Yuji Nagata
• NEVER Openweight Championship: Jay White (c) def. David Finlay
• IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship: Hiroshi Tanahashi def. Lance Archer (c)

The biggest news coming out of the show was the surprise return of former IWGP World Heavyweight Championship holder Will Ospreay.

Ospreay has been out of action since he was forced to vacate the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in May due to a neck injury. He announced he is now medically cleared to compete but will not compete in the upcoming G1 Climax tournament.

Holding what he called the “real” title, Ospreay said that current IWGP World Heavyweight Championship holder Shingo Takagi (more news on him later) is an interim champion.

Ospreay teased the possibility of appearing in other promotions, alluding to the forbidden door between New Japan and the likes of All Elite Wrestling and Impact Wrestling (without naming any specific companies, other than shutting down an “A-E-DUB” chant).

Ospreay declared New Japan’s STRONG brand will be his new home and went on a tirade against New Japan’s Los Angeles-based dojo. Clark Connors and Karl Fredericks took exception to Ospreay’s comments but were held back by security.

Yuya Uemura declared he is no longer a young lion backstage after the second match.

Moose teased backstage that he will return to New Japan’s STRONG brand after the fourth match.

Jon Moxley’s mystery partner was revealed to be Yuji Nagata, but the duo came up short against Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson. The winners were then confronted by their former Bullet Club stalemates Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa.

Jay White made his first successful defense of the NEVER Openweight Championship against David Finlay. White called himself the “real belt collector” – a not-so-subtle shot at AEW megastar Kenny Omega.

Tomohiro Ishii came to the ring to signal his intention to challenge White for the title next.

Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Lance Archer to win the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship in the main event. Moxley was seated ringside for the match.

New Japan announced during the show that it will hold two more shows in southern California in November – Battle in the Valley on November 13 in San Jose and Detonation on November 15 in the Riverside Municipal Auditorium.

Back in Japan, New Japan held its fourteenth Summer Struggle tour show today in Fujisan Messe, without IWGP World Heavyweight Championship holder Takagi.

BUSHI and Takagi missed today’s show due to both having a fever. They were scheduled to team with SANADA and Tetsuya Naito against Dick Togo, EVIL, Gedo and Yujiro Takahashi in the main event.

It is worth remembering Takagi is scheduled to attempt his second defense of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against EVIL at the third night of Wrestle Grand Slam on September 5 in the MetLife Dome.

The full results from today’s show, which was also delayed for two hours due to heavy rain, were:

• Satoshi Kojima and Tiger Mask def. Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma
• El Desperado, Minoru Suzuki and Yoshinobu Kanemaru def. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Master Wato and Ryusuke Taguchi
• SANADA and Tetsuya Naito def. EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi
• Chase Owens, El Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori def. SHO, Toru Yano and YOH
