AEW has been over a million viewers two weeks in a row. During that time, there has been blood and extreme violence. How does TNT feel about that?
I think they are pretty happy. It’s not like AEW doing those things is new. They have had gore on the show since the beginning. It seems to me that TNT is fine with it as long as it draws viewers.
How do you feel about it?
I hate blood in wrestling. I hate chair shots to the head. I hate when wrestlers take dangerous bumps. With that said, a lot of people like it so if the talents want to do it and Tony Khan wants to promote it, it’s going to happen. As I say all the time, it doesn’t matter if I like it. It matters if AEW is giving their fans what they want.
What does it say about the staleness of WWE when they bring back John Cena and he opens both Raw and Smackdown?
I get what you are saying and I agree that the booking is mostly stale in WWE. But in this case, they haven't had Cena in a while and he is a huge name. With them trying to draw bigger TV numbers (now that AEW is getting close to them), I can see why they sent him out there. Also, they are trying to build SummerSlam into this year's WrestleMania due to the pandemic. Plus, they were back in front of live fans and they wanted to fire them up.
What does it say that the fans actually cheered Cena? The same speeches used to get him booed.
It says he has been gone for a while and absence makes the heart grow fonder.
I was wondering... are you aware of any books that cover the psychological aspects of wrestling, i.e. how to cut good promos, how to make a great gimmick, etc?
Personally, I am not but that doesn't mean that they aren't out there.
