NEW JAPAN SUMMER STRUGGLE RESULTS, IBUSHI HELD OFF SHOW, GLEAT, DRAGON GATE AND MORE FROM JAPAN

New Japan Pro Wrestling held the first night of its two-night Summer Struggle in Sapporo event today in Makomanai Sekisui Heim Ice Arena.

Kota Ibushi did not compete on the show due to suffering from the side effects of his first COVID-19 vaccine. Bushiroad founder Takaaki Kidani confirmed all company employees, including New Japan wrestlers, received their first COVID-19 vaccine on July 8.

El Desperado made his second successful defense of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against Taiji Ishimori in the main event. After the match, a video aired of Robbie Eagles challenging Desperado for the title.

Unlike other round-robin tournaments, the scoring system for the Fire Festival is slightly different.

Five points are awarded for victory by pinfall, submission or knockout. Four points are awarded for victory by referee stoppage, countout or disqualification. Three points are awarded for a draw (there is a 30-minute time limit for all block matches) and zero points are awarded for a loss.
