New Japan Pro Wrestling
New Japan Pro Wrestling will return to the Tokyo Dome on July 25 for its Wrestle Grand Slam show.
The show was originally scheduled to take place on May 29, but was postponed due to the extended state of emergency in Japan.
Shingo Takagi will attempt his first defense of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Kota Ibushi in the main event. It will be Ibushi’s fourth time headlining the Tokyo Dome, the third this year, while it will be Takagi’s first Tokyo Dome main event.
The May 29 show was set to be headlined by Will Ospreay attempting his first defense of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Kazuchika Okada. Ospreay was forced to vacate the title due to a neck injury and Takagi defeated Okada to win the vacant title.
New Japan has cancelled the also postponed Wrestle Grand Slam show in Yokohama Stadium. It was originally scheduled to take place on May 15, with bouts such as Jay White attempting his first defense of the NEVER Openweight Championship against David Finlay, but an alternate date could not be found due to scheduling conflicts.
Wrestle Grand Slam will not just take place on July 25 in the Tokyo Dome, however. The second and third nights will take place on September 4 and 5 in the MetLife Dome in Saitama.
New Japan’s last show in the MetLife Dome was August 2014 when Okada defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to win the G1 Climax 24.
New Japan held its third Kizuna Road tour show today in Korakuen Hall. The full results were:
• Hiroshi Tanahashi def. Yuya Uemura
• Kazuchika Okada def. Yota Tsuji
• Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata def. Kota Ibushi, Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma
• El Desperado, Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Zack Sabre Jr. def. BUSHI, SANADA, Shingo Takagi and Tetsuya Naito
