COMPLETE AEW DOUBLE OR NOTHING BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2021-05-30 20:00:00

I’ve got my bottle of soda, snacks, and they will wash the taste of Friday night's Dynamite out of my mouth as we start the Pre Show for AEW Double or Nothing.  They start with a condensed version of the Preview special from TNT giving the build up to each match.  If you haven't been watching AEW for the last month or so, this brings you up to speed, but there's nothing new here.

After 30 minutes of that, we get The Buy In, which is the live pre show with Excalibur and Tony Schiavone and they have a full house.  They run down the card and once again, get the video package about Britt Baker vs Hikaru Shida.  They do have Shida call Baker a Dirty Moron Dentist, which I liked.

It's time for the first match:

Riho vs Serena Deeb

Gotta To be blunt here, hearing a REAL pop is exciting and feels special. The announcer points out that Riho has moved to the US.  After the first mixup between the two, Riho asks for a handshake and Deeb waits a while before slapping her, because she's now a more aggressive, ruthless champion since coming back and a good way to let the crowd know that.  From there, it moves from an even match to Riho doing her high flying inpactful moves and Deeb brawling with her and moving it to being more mat- based. Deeb puts Riho in an inverted Gori special and holds it for over a minute.  Damn, that is strength.

The last third of the match is Deeb working to pin Riho and Riho fighting out at the last second, and the crowd is into each near fall. Riho gets a few comeback spots, and Deeb ends it by slamming Riho's knee into the mat repeatedly before locking in the Serenity lock, which she also used on Dynamite a few weeks ago.

We then get a video package of yesterday's fan fest.

The set up for the show is the same as they had for Friday's Dynamite, and they are shooting it differently, making Daily's Place look more impressive than it does for Dynamite.  It's amazing how different it looks with the setup and it makes the show look special, unlike a lot of over pay per views looking the same as the normal TV show.

We get a rerun of the video package of the Bucks vs Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingson.

Taz joins the broadcast team as our first match for the pay per view proper will be Brian Cage vs Adam Page. He is followed by Jim Ross.

And now it's time for Double or Nothing!

Adam Page vs Brian Cage

Cage has some kind of half armor over his torso and half of his face. Cage has said he doesn't want any of Team Taz at ringside. Adam Page's title card says he is a horse with a hangover.

Page starts with a flurry of offense and the crowd chants Cowboy Sh!t, and when Cage starts to get in his offense, the crowd boos loudly. Looks like they are excited about being back at a live event. The chants are so loud they almost drown out the announcers. The story of the match is that Cage is much stronger than Page, but Page is trying to find how to take him down to get in his offense. The next phase of the match is Cage's power moves and Page trying to either survive them or finding ways out of them. Cage tries his hand at the Buckshot lariat and Page avoids it and hits a F5 of Cage in a nice sequence that starts a quick series of finishing moves and hear falls.

Starks and Hook come to the ring and Starks slides the FTW belt to Cage who slides it back. This leads to Page getting the buckshot lariat and the win.

Page celebrates his win with happy beers and Cage argues with Starks and Hook after Page leaves. Cage shoves them aside and goes to the back.

The announcers give us a rundown of tonight's card and yet another showing of the video package of the Bucks vs Mox and Kingston. This match is getting a HUGE push.

The Young Bucks (AEW Tag Team Champions) vs Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston

Mox and Kington come in through the crowd. The crowd chats for Eddie and when the Bucks come the ring, the crowd boos, not loudly, but they are boobs and no cheers. Mox and Eddie attack once the streamers explode and it's a brawl. Don Callis joins commentary and the crowd keep chanting for Eddie. Mox takes a break during the fight to drink a beer Sandman style and smash the can against his forehead. Mox and Kingston take Brandon Cutler out and this is all before the bell.

The Bucks take advantage of this and start their attack and the bell rings. The Bucks's flurry is short lived as Mox and Eddie keep up the brawling. The Bucks take over and work their style on Eddie, which gets the crowd hot and when Mox is able to interfere, the crowd pops big. When Mox gets the hot tag, ever move gets a cheer.

I am mentioning the crowd a lot because the match itself is a lot like other encounters with the two teams, but the crowd being so hot is lifting it up a couple of notches.

We get shenanigans and Gallows tries to attack, but Eddie and security take him out. Mox gets cold sprayed and the can is thrown at his head and he's busted open. Anderson comes to the ramp and Frankie Kazarian drives him off and they brawl to the back.

Mox takes a Meltzer Driver on the ramp and when he crawls back into the ring, he calls for the Bucks to keep attacking. The Bucks then keep Mox in the ring to work him over and Eddie waits for his chance to come in. Bucks to a lot of mocks Mox and the crowd. Rick Knox seems to not know how to tell the Bucks that one has to leave. Once Eddie tags in, the house cleaning results in another huge Eddie change. Eddie locks in a stretch on Nick and when Matt attacks him to break it up, Eddie's facial expression of “You didn't think that would work, did you” was priceless.

They do a nice series of each stopping the second person from doing their part for the two man finishing move. After a series of near falls, Mox Hulks Up but it doesn't last long enough it win the match. Mox takes a series of BTE Triggers to win the match.

Great brawl, and Mox and Eddie were able to keep the Bucks from doing their choreographed moves to make it seem like it was their night. This match also showed that Eddie Kingston is a HUGE star for AEW.

The sun has set and the lights are up for the battle royal. Paul Wight comes to the announcer's table for this match.

It's the Casino battle royal, so they come out in groups every three minutes.

Casino Battle Royal

Christian Cage is the first out. He's followed by Matt Sydal, Powerhouse Hobbs, Dustin Rhodes and his bullrope, Mox Caster who raps his way to the ring, saying yo more times than PN News.

Yeah. I'm old.

Matt Sydal is out first, tossed by Max Caster. Max Caster gets eliminated by Cage.

Matt Hardy is the first of the Diamond group, 10 of the Dark Order, Nick Comorodo, Sirpentico begin dragged to the ring by Luthor, Isiah Kassidy is the last for this group.

Sirpentico is eliminated quickly. 10 and Comoardo fight as everyone else lays on the mat to recover until Dustin eliminates them both. Comoardo nails Dustin with Dustin's own cow bell. Hobbs then tosses Dustin and Matt hasn't entered the ring until the 3 minuter is us.

Both Varsity Blondes are out next, Colt Cabana, Anthony Bowens, and Penta El Zero Middo.

Colt is tossed out, as is Bowens. They aren't letting the ring fill up, which is a good idea for thids kind of match. Looks like Bowens is out.

Announcers are confused over who has been tossed.

Last batch is Jungle Boy who faces off with Penta.

As they fight, Marq Quen, Erin Solow, Evil Uno, and Lee Johnson.

Pillman is eliminated as is Solow. Everyone left is pairing up for fights and Uno is tossed. Hardy and Private Party are still in. Penta is eliminated by JB, and Hobbs and Cage return to the ring. Cage is able to toss Hobbs after they brawl. Matt pulls his team together to attack Cage.

And the Joker is: Lio Rush!

He gets a nice spotlight taking on Private Party and Matt Hardy. Hardy is able to eliminate Rush as he was trying to eliminate Private Party during a silly string.

JB and Cage eliminate Private Party as they tried the silly string again. It's Cage and JB with Hardy and Hardy tries to team with Cage, who eliminates him.

It's Cage and JB, and go right to working on the rope with the crowd singing JB's theme.

They have a brawl on the apron and lots of near falls, but JB is able to toss Cage, and is your winner and getting a title shot.

The crowd sings Tarzan Boy louder than the song itself being played.

I wonder if Rush is now full time with AEW or if he will spilt his time with NJPW.

They highlight the military and ask us to support the act in front of Congress that gives service dogs to veterans. Great cause, and this is a link to the bill. Please call yoru Congressperson to voice support for this legislation:

Anthony Ogogo vs Cody Rhodes

Ogogo comes to the ring carrying a Union Jack, but Cody comes to the ring is red white and blue gear.

Ogogo goes for his gut punch early on, and then hits a series of moves so that Cody is working hurt. Every time Cody goes for a move, Ogogo is able to stop him until the midpoint fo the match. Cody gets in some offense, and Ogogo is busted open. Doesn't look series and closes up quickly. Cody is able to slap on the Figure Four to give Ogogo something to overcome with a hurt leg.

There's slight shenanigans with QT Marshall trying to interfere and Arn lumbering over with a chair, but Cody is able to hit the Vertibreaker to end the match and win for the USA.

Ogogo still looks strong here and Cody gets his win. Both did a good job of covering up Ogogo's inexperience.

We then get a recap of Miro attacking Jake Roberts at Fan Fest before the Miro vs Lance Archer match

Miro (TNT Champion) vs Lance Archer\

Archer dives into Miro before the bell and Archer walks the rope and hits a moonsault from the middle of the ropes to start off the match with a blast. Archer hits a spinebuster outside the ring, putting Miro through a table. The brawl continues outside the ring and Miro tosses Archer over the barricade into the fans.

In the ring, the match slows down. Miro and Archer hit each other with big moves, pausing after each one. It's back and forth, and the announcers remind us the the TNT title has a 20 minute time limit right before Jake comes ot the ring with his bag, and Miro gives Archer a big kick, and then tosses the back to the back. Jake struggles to get up and Archer stops him from running into Jake in the corner.

The match goes back to being a back and forth, and Miro does a series of moves showing just how strong he is. Miro starts working Archer's back to prep him for the Game Over, and when he does, Archer passes out and Miro retains.

We get a video for the next Pay Per View. Chicago gets the September show All Out on 9/5.

Hikaru Shida (AEW Women's Champion) vs Britt Baker

Baker is out to a huge pop and Rebel has her crutch, still not knowing how to use it. Shida is out next with the new belt and her Kendo stick.

I love that the crowd yelled “Not Rebel” when Reba was introduced.

They start by throwing hands and then go for finishing moves right off. Shida gets a chant to start, and they slow down and start grappling. As they trade near fall, the crowd is chanting DMD. There is a strong seuqnece where they trade holds. There is a brawl outside the ring where they both look over by a step, and Baker gets the advantage as they go back into the ring.

Beker ups the ruthlessness and starts posing for the crowd as she puts on the glove for her finishing move. Baker isn't using any chearting, just lots of strikes and attacks. Shida's comeback is a series of knee strikes.

Good series of near falls after the knee strikes and both of them look like they have beat the tar out fo each other. LOTS of action and both are looking like champions in this match. Baker struggling to put on the lockjaw by the rop ewas an excellent struggle. Shida then takes control with strikes and they struggle on the top turnbuckle before a superplex. Shida tries to lock on the strethc muffler, but Reba tries to interfere and screw up, hurting Baker.

As Reba is sent to the back, the belt is tossed in and Baker hits a curb stomp on the belt, but doesn't get the three count in spite of that. They trade finishers, and Baker is finally able to gety the lockjaw in the midel of the ring, and Shida has to tap/

Britt Baker is now the Women's Champion in a fabulous match where both women looked strong. A true roller coaster of a match.

Tony comes to the ramp to give Baker a hug.

We see the warmups of Pac, who is doing pushups, Orange Cassidy, who is sitting whiel the best friends spar, and Kenny Omega, who is with Don Callis, shooting basketballs.

Sting and Darby Allin vs Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page

After Sky and Page come to the ring, we gert a black and white skateboard video with Darby. As he skateboards from the desert to Sting's car and they morosely drive to the event. Sting lets us know it's showtime.

Darby launches himself out fo the ring into Page while Sky and Sting battle on the ramp. Sky tosses Sting over and Sting pops up and stands behind Sky as Sky does the “He's right behind me, isn't he”, from every slasher movie. Sting leaps off the ramp into Page and Sky and the match behind.

JR starts to say the Sting is moving gingerly, but stops and says he's moving “very nice.” as he works over Sky. Darby tags in and gets to take the beating from Sky and Page. They keep him in the ring to work him over as Sting paces on the apron. Sting gets tagged in, but the ref doesn't see it, so we build up even more heat. Page tossed Darby from the ring into the crowd where his brothersw are seated.

Sting grabs Darby and tries to him back in the ring, and Darby looks like he's out cold until the 9 count, when he shoots back into the ring. Darby gets his comeback when Page tries for the Ego's Edge and Sting tags in for the big [pop as he cleans house. Sting gets in his splashes, a roll up and a two count before tagging in Darby, but Sky attacks Darby on the apron. Sting locks in the Scorpion Death Lock on Page (he legal man) and Sky slaps on the heel hook on Darby (the legal man) and Darby and Page slap each other until they break it up and go to Page and Darby struggling to get to their corners.

Sting comes in the face off with Sky and they throw hands. Sting hits the Scorpion Death Drop and pins Sky for the win.

Better than I expected as Sting got in his crowd pleasers, and Darby allowed himself to get tossed around. Sting had a good Legend match and Sky and Page were great heels.

They show an abbreviated version of the buildup for the AEW Championship match from the Buy In.

Kenny Omega (AEW Champion) vs Pac, vs Orange Cassidy

They announce there is no DQ and no countouts because it's a three man match.

Kenny comes to the ring with all four belts and hands all but the AEW belt to Callis.

Omega knocks Cassidy out of the ring so that we get Pac and Omega. When they take each other down, Cassidy rolls in and covers Omega for a two count. As Kenny and Pac get up, they turn to Cassidy who dodges them and then takes them both down, pinning Omega for a two.,

Pac comes in and goes right after OmgA, taking him down outside the ring and we get Pac and Cassidy for a while. When Omega comes in, Pac has control of the match and is able to work them both over, then Omega gets the upper hand. Once he has the upper hand, he hits big moves on either Pac or Cassidy and then showboats afterwards.

Cassidy and Omega do the “rolls onto each other to trade pins” sequence, and when Omega is bridging with Cassidy, Pac hits a 450 splash onto them. Looked amazing. Omega then takes control again and starts signature moves like snapdragon suplexes and V triggers until Pac cuts him off. Everything Pac does looks stiff as hell.

Kenny goes for the snapdragon on Cassidy from the top but Cassidy stops it with POCKETS!

Pac gets the suplex on Omega instead and it's time for Cassidy to get in some pockets moves before taking a Tiger Driver.

The match has become Omega hitting moves, going for the pin and the man he's trying to pin able to kick out at the last second. I was worried this would be a match where two guys fight while one lays on the outside the whole time, but they've done a good job of finding a way to keep everyone involved for most of the time.

Nice bit where Pac hits a superplex on Omega, and Cassidy runs in immediately and tossed Pac out of the ring and steals a two count. Cassidy goes for the light kicks and Pac nails him with a low blow kick because No DQ. Omega stops that pin at the last second, and the crowd is into the near falls big time.

Omega goes for the one winged angel and Pac locks in a brutailzer instead. Cassdidy is able to get in and hit the Orange Punch and a beach break on Omega for the two count.

Cassidy nails both Pac and the Omega with Orange Pucnhes and Callis leaves the announcers' booth to ringside. Cassidy covers Pac after another Orange Punch and Callis drag the ref out of the ring.

No DQ.

Cassidy and Omega fight on the top, he then dives into Pac's arms and locks in the brutalizer. Omega tries to break the move, and when Pac won't break the hold, Omega doubel axe handles the ref, he uses the belt on Pac. He does it again with another belt. He does it again with a third belt. Cassidy comes in, bnits the Orange Crush on Omega, and Aubrey runs in to count two. Omega locks on a crucifix for the suprise roll up and the three count.

Kenny Omega retains and this may be the best three way match in ages. Lots of action, lots of stories being told, and Omega winning via heel tactics and sheer power at the end.

They then show a video that Full Gear PPV will be in St Louis in November.

Tony announces that on Rampage, Mark Henry will be one of the announcers. They run down the matches coming on Dynamite this week.

It's now time for Stadium Stampede, and the Pinnacle come to the ring in a limo. MJF gets out of the limo and cuts a promo on how this is the end of the limo for Jericho.

We then see the Inner Circle repelling down from the scoreboard.

The Pinnacle vs The Inner Circle, if the Inner Circle lose, they have to break up.

The Inner Circle rush the limo and as they do, the Pinnacle show up in a truck to ambush them, and the brawl has begon. Sammy and Spears go to the ring to right as everyone else has paired up and is brawling all after the field.

MJF comes out of the limo when he thinks it's all clear, but Jericho was waiting behind the limo so that they can brawl. FTR with Santana and Ortiz fight up the stadium seats and Jericho and MJF brawl at the snack bar. MJF hits him with a phone and tells us “Jericho can't answer the phone right now, he's swallowing his own teeth.” Jericho grabs a megaphone and shots into it, deafening MJF.

They use hot coffee, garbage cans, tables, chairs, footballs and a lap top. Jericho is in control and the coaches for the Jaguars are there to watch.

As they go through a door we go to Wardlow and Jake Hager and this is just a hoss fight. They fight into the cooler and then through the food storage area. Neither one has the upper hand as Wardlow puts Hager through a wall into the kitchen area.

Sammy is chasing Spears, who is in a spotlight in a room where they store chairs. Sammy shows amazing athleticism as they brawl around a forklift, flipping off of walls and dodging around the forklift until Spears lawn darts him into the garage door. Spears throws away bolt cutters and takes a chair instead and they start brawling again. Sammy tries to choke him out with an electrical cord. As Spears is almost out, Sammy goes to the top rack in the garage and has to come down as Spears moves away, and Spears tosses a ladder into Sammy. Spears takes chains and shackles Sammy to one of the metal racks.

Sammy is able to see the bolt cutters as Spears walks off.

In the bar area, Santana and Ortiz catch up with FTR and Tully. They get rid of everyone in the bar and Tully puts drinks in front of them. Running the DJ booth is Konnan.

Now, its time to brawl. I don't know if it's meant to be a tribute to New Jack, but the music playing through the right sure feels like one to me.

Back to Wardlow and Hager, and Wardlow is in control, but Hager is able to mount a comeback. They fight onto the infamous golf cart and Hager slams Wardlow through a wooden structure.

Jericho and MJF and fight it out in the office area. Jricho is able to nail MJF with a cardboard standee of Tony Khan's dad. They fight into a boardroom. Jericho staples a “Thank you” card to MJF's head and then rips it out. They fight on top of the board room table and MJF piledrives Jericho into in and pins for a two count. MJF grabs a claw hammer and goes for Jericho's injured arm, but Jericho escapes and Jericho finds Floyd the baseball bat.

Jericho tosses MJF through the glass of an office door and Tony hopes MJF is a bloody mess. Tony is bloodthirsty tonight.

In the basement, the Inner Circle motorcycles chase Spears into a stairway.

Jericho and MJF battle into Daily's Place. MJF is busted open and he tries to toss Jericho off the balcony to the floor, but Jericho escapes. Jericho is able to put MJF through a Box in the balcony, and while the crowd cheers, Tony yells at him to do it again.

We cut to Spears and Sammy has a golf cart and nails Spears with it. They are at the entrance to Daily's Place and they head to the ring. Spears rolls into the ring and has a chair, but Sammy si able to stop him from using it. Spears is able to grab the chair and nails Sammy with it and covers for a two count.

Spears tells him to give up and Sammy flips him off. Spears nails him with a chair to the "head" as Sammy lifted his arm.

NO, dammit, no chair shots.

Spears gets a two count. Spears wedges the chair in the corner. He picks up Sammy and Sammy is able to hit a GTS. Sammy then pushes Spears inot the chair with his foot and he climbs to the top. 630 senton from Sammy and he covers for a three count.

The Inner Circle wins! They come to the ring to hug and the crowd sings Jericho's theme as we close the show.
