WWE revealed tonight that the theme for the 8/21 Summerslam 2021 PPV is Cardi B's song Up.
The inclusion of the song raised quite a few eyebrows as WWE President Nick Khan told Forbes back in February that Cardi B was among the celebrities WWE had their eye on as someone they wanted to have involved, commenting, "Yes, and specifically the two that you just mentioned (Bad Bunny and Cardi B). Obviously, there is no touring right now, so the ability to get Bad Bunny for however long this run is going to be—and you’re gonna see a lot of him—I don’t believe that would have existed in a world where Bad Bunny was on tour. That’s going to be a continual effort, so we’re always going to watch Bad Bunny, Cardi B to get involved.”
Cardi B was a WWE fan prior to her rise as a musical powerhouse, so this could be the first step in her involvement in Summerslam or beyond within WWE. There's been talk of the PPV having a host, which would be a great role for her, obviously.
Speaking of Summerslam, a number of readers have pointed out that Saturday 8/21 is the date for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Errol Spence Jr. boxing match. When asked about going head to head with that fight, a WWE source pointed out that they could easily choose to run earlier in the day, especially in a Pacific Time Zone on a Saturday afternoon, so the events would not take place at the same time. That would also keep PPV outlets from having to choose between the events, so stay tuned.
