Drake Wuertz, who had been with the company since March 2014 and at one point was the head WWE NXT referee, was released earlier today, PWInsider.com has confirmed with multiple sources.
As PWInsider.com reported last week, there had been growing concern about Wuertz among some in the company.
We are told there may have been other NXT cuts today as well. PWInsider.com is working to confirm that.
Update: 4:38 PM - Wuertz is looking to return to wrestling or officiating outside of WWE. We have been told he's already contacting promoters to state he is a free agent. We are told Wuertz was among the first cut today, having been informed around 11 AM EST. PWInsider.com initially reached out to WWE at 12 PM today for confirmation on his release but as of 4:38 PM, has not heard back.
ADDITIONAL NOTE - I was recording with Dave Scherer when I posted the initial article and inadvertently set it for an incorrect hour. The actual original posting time, 2:12 PM EST, was corrected once Dave and I completed the We Don't Need No Stinkin' Name Show.
