NEW JAPAN POSTPONES WRESTLE GRAND SLAM EVENTS, INCLUDING RETURN TO TOKYO DOME

By Oliver Taylor on 2021-05-07 09:22:00

New Japan Pro Wrestling has postponed its two Wrestle Grand Slam shows on May 15 in Yokohama Stadium and May 29 in the Tokyo Dome in response to the extended state of emergency in Japan.

Rescheduled dates for the shows are currently being determined.

The postponements obviously wreak havoc on New Japan’s booking plans. Most notably, Will Ospreay was scheduled to attempt his second defense of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Kazuchika Okada on the second night on May 29 in the Tokyo Dome.

As for the first night, Kota Ibushi had challenged Jeff Cobb and Jay White had nominated David Finlay as his first challenger for the NEVER Openweight Championship.

The state of emergency has been extended to May 31. New Japan’s first show after that date is the first show of its Road to Dominion tour on June 1 in Korakuen Hall. There will be two more tour shows on June 2 in Korakuen Hall and June 4 in Ota City General Gymnasium before Dominion.

Dominion is traditionally New Japan’s second biggest show after Wrestle Kingdom and is scheduled to take place on June 6 in Osaka-j? Hall this year.

As such, New Japan could conceivably reschedule some of the marquee matches set for both nights of Wrestle Grand Slam for Dominion.
